I know that in SR it was a food shortage and people protecting hazardous
materials which gave rise to corporate security forces in the SR
world...but in the article below it might be hackers which start the
process here.

A man by the name of Lou Cipher...an alias for a computer hacker vigilante
(i.e. shadowrunner)
works for Fortune 500 companies tracking down hackers into their computers
(pay starts at 100,000).
He claims that if he find the hacker he and his associates (fellow runners)
will break into the person's
home to steal their computer in order to teach them a lesson. He calls it
corporate self-defense.
