Or - You've been commissioned to track down and steal three staves.
What you don't know is that the person who hired you is a cursed
immortal who plans on using the staves (ancient artifacts) to seal
Earth from the metaplanes and stop the flow of magic so that he can
die. At roughly the same time a council of Great Dragons will be
putting their plans to take over the world into action (and it won't be
pretty). It's going to create quite a dilema when you find out what's
going on. Do you stop the immortal from taking away the magic,
continuing the curse and giving the dragons free reign? Or do you
allow him to finish his ritual which will let him die, and will also
greatly diminish the dragon's power (or maybe destroy them entirely)?

Or - Your new girlfriend turns out to be a mildly insane lesser horror
who has been trapped on earth since the 4th age of magic. It turns out
you resemble someone "she" fell in love with back in the 4th age. She
thinks you are that person and pursues your affections aggresivly. She
isn't a threat to you, but woe be the person who tries to come between
you.

IMHO, an EGM presents the player(s) with a moral quandry, or messes
with their character's life in an amusing way (convinces the player
that it's fun when things suck for their character).
