Were the cockroaches wearing little smiley face masks? And was the
leader shouting out, in a mock german accent, "Okay everrrybody, grab a
body hairrr. On the count of thrrree, pull. One.. Two.. Thrrrree!"?

It depends. Was there a way for them to drop the barrier spell by
sacrificing something or someone? I.e., could the physad have chopped
his way through the barrier by burning karma? Could the mage have
burnt out the barrier by short-circuiting it with his brand new power
focus (destroying the focus in the process). Could the rigger have
dropped the barrier by ramming his scout drone into the barrier at full
speed (reducing the drone to a shower of sparks)?

Putting the PCs in a position that sucks isn't really evil. Putting
them in a position that sucks and giving them a way out that sucks,
that's evil :) Don't think, "Into the frying pan." Think, "Into the
frying pan, out of the frying pan, into the fire."

And "suck" is relative. It's like when you were a kid and you had the
choice of mowing the lawn, or cleaning out the garage. Sucky options
don't always have to involve death and/or dismemberment.

Oh, and start using the emoticon "EG". Pretty soon you'll find
yourself with an EGMG on your face <EGMG>.
