Okay, let me go more into details:
The guy who told the whole story about the team to the media was
tracked down by a persistent snoop (he was the most visible guy in the
team). The snoop worked for this big Trid channel and basically
offered him a deal: "Either you tell me the whole story about your
team, get a big bonus and we'll leave you out of it, or I'll show
your face on trid and give you a special at nine o'clock prime time.
I know more about you than you want me to."
The guy knew the team wasn't going to let him walk, but on the other
hand if he didn't talk his job as a runner would be over and most
likely he would spend the next few millennia in prison for all the
good deeds he has done (if he would make it to prison).

The thing was that the team had an arrangement like that; talk and
you're dead, but in this case they might have let him walk, split the
money, set up a new identity and move on. However the team's rigger
had to choose between his 500K Cloud Nine or his 500K Westwind (not
enough drivers available). He choose the C9 (wise choice) and later
saw his Westwind being taken apart on trid by the Star. Consequently
he lost it, destroyed the trid, got kicked out of the hotel and was
recognized and killed in a gun fight by the Star. The other two
runners managed to sneak out of town in their RR Phantom (they were
fairly rich indeed) posing as rich corp execs. The C9 however had a
rigger remote control unit and the RR was set up to be used as a
drone.
End result was that they had to bail the RR and spend three days
hiding and running. At the end of that time they used the money that
was left to them to hire a hitman and just left enough for a face job
and two tickets to Europe.

That should be enough dammit <EGMG>,
