I'm not a Canadian, but it seems pretty straightforward to me: you can be
king/queen of more than one country. Elizabeth II is queen of the United
Kingdom (or whatever the right term is in this case) but also of Canada,
and of Australia, and probably of a bunch of other independent countries
as well -- none of which necessarily has anything to do with the UK
anymore even despite sharing a head of state.

It would be like Bill Clinton getting citizenship in another country, in
addition to his US citizenship, and running for president there. He'd be
president of both the US and of that other country at the same time.
(Provided neither has laws prohibiting this sort of thing, of course.)

Only the reigning king or queen at the time would be involved, I would
guess, and even then probably only to sign the Canadian laws that deal
with unification with the USA.
