As a preference I like to play really weak characters; at least half of
their attributes at the racial average and most skills at 3 or 4 with one or
two skills and/or attributes in the 5's or 6's. The way I see it, the GM
will send you up against NPCs at the same power level as you are so why
bother crunching numbers?
That way you also get a chance to improve your character without unbalancing
the game; as I've probably mentioned before, my cat shaman character has
racked up well over 200 good karma, I've been playing her for over a year
and she is the weakest character in a campaign where all the other
chraracters are a few games old.
That's just my preference though; when I GM I normally have to crack out the
kick ass NPCs (or the smart ones) because the rest of my group like to play
characters who kick ass a bit better than the ones I play.

Dieing is an art like everything else.
