Actually, I believe that the President and his family do sleep in the
White House. It keeps him as close to his offices and situation rooms
as possible without forcing him to bunk in them. Always good in a
crisis, especially if there are threats against his life.
The Residence you are talking about, I believe is the Vice Presidents
residence. It's a non-descript building not far from the Capitol
building. The White House, Residence, Capitol building, Pentagon, and
any other major agency are all interconnected by a "private" subway to
ease travel and increase security.
