Strange, but even though I don't have kids of mine own, similar thoughts
have come to me as well. My brother and I briefly talked about his
daughter, my niece, who is almost 4 now and well on her way to 40 (I'll bet
you either do have or will have soon knowledge of what I mean). There's
been excessive conversation on the local news level(s) about this kind of
conversation potential and how to go about it.

I asked my mother if this really was "like when JFK died" and she replied
"No... that was vastly different... they are both tragedies, just on
different scales".

Be honest would be the only advice I would give, but be careful not to
do/say too much just yet. In the end, if you have the concern for your
daughter (and you obviously do by asking this), you'll probably be fine just
by being there and being who she needs you to be.
