In fact, I can see the megacorps doing just that by putting some research
into taking the harmful chemicals out of tobacco, and then putting in
something at least as addictive, but which won't cause the smoking
employees to become less productive by being sick, getting cancer,
coughing, etc.

You don't need to care about people to make them better :)
