How about this-

Roll all the normal skill dice, then all the complementary skill dice.

IF one of the complmentary dice is higher than the normal dice, average it
with the highest normal die. If not, just use the highest normal skill die.

This is a little extra work than just ading some dice, but no more than
using complementary skills on a normal roll. It has the advantage of
differentiating the complementary skill from the normal skill in a way that
makes it MUCH harder for the complementary skill to skew the result upwards
by much- which is a real possiblity with extra dice, because the average
result with an open test goes up a LOT in some cases just by adding one or 2
dice.
