I know this is going to sound hokey, but atmosphere goes a long way. There's
a run out there by Steve Kenson that's loosely based on Jaws and suggests
using the soundtrack to help build suspense. On its own I don't think the run
would have impressed them that much but that theme had them on their toes the
whole time. It was sweet. For a horror/suspense mood I would suggest proper
lighting, not so dark they can't read their character sheets (or more
importantly that you can't read your GM material) but try using some
candlelight. Tone of voice goes a long way too. Raise and lower your voice
appropriately as you narrate what is going on. Another trick I've heard about
but never gotten a chance to try for myself yet is rather than telling
characters what they see out loud when they're off by themselves, isolate
them. Either dialogue completely by notes or take them off into a separate
room. You shouldn't leave the players waiting too long or they'll get
restless and bored, but just long enough to let the suspense build. Hope this
