What it says and what you said are very different.

You said that cars are designed to channel external electricity. The
article I linked to says that steel, nonconvertable vehicles will
channel external electricity.

You said that vehicles would be immune to lightning based powers. The
article recognized several examples where this was not the case.

In another 60 years I expect it to be worse, well, kinda. Cars are
being made with less and less steel and with more and more plastic and
fiberglass. As manufacture of said materials continues to become less
expensive the trend will continue. As the amount of conducting
material in the frame and body are reduced, and the amount of wiring
is increased (for all of those fancy electronics) the vital parts of
the car (the electronics which control everything) become a much more
attractive path for any electricity which hits the car. Course,
reducing the amount of metal will make vehicles less attractive to
lightning, but more vulnerable to lightning based spells.
