Thank you, everyone who weighed in on this. Sounds like this will be one of
those "If I cast Invisibility on a closed door, can I see through it?"
debates that won't really get hammered out all that well.

What I've gathered is this:

The car may not take a lot of damage, but tires should be blown/melted
and/or sensitive electronics should be fried. In addition, vehicles with
less metal should take more damage. Furthermore, as the description states,
metal armor doesn't protect against this sort of attack, so now the question
becomes "How much armor DOES protect against the damage?" so we can
accurately gauge the effect.

FWIW, I view it like this:

The lightning ball fills a sphere with a radius of 8m. It doesn't explode
outward or inward, it simply comes into existence for a split second and
does its thing. As such, if targeted above a car, in theory it could hit
anything within the car as well.

I didn't mean to get into a physics argument, because arguing physics in a
game of magic is ultimately futile. I'm just wondering how the rules work in
this case. [:

Thanks for the links to the lightning-struck cars. I worked for GM a few
years back and we got called by a guy with a Cadillac, had gotten struck by
lightning and totalled because the entire electrical system had melted.
Totalled, I said. In my mind, that's damage, possibly even Deadly, depending
on how you look at it. *shrug* YMMV, of course.
