I am positive that is not how it works. Fireballs and other spells create an
explosion at there point of impact. That point has to be seen by the caster.
Then the ball explodes instantly (because despite movies you cannot dodge
explosions) engulfing its area of effect. If you are behind a wall or some
sort of cover the explosion must blast through the cover to effect you.
