That's easy... there's a statistical concept called
'Interpolation.' Its basically a way to use what
you know to guess about things you don't know.

The way it works is you look for similar items
that are defined in the reality of the rules,
and you set the physical stats of the object
based on how similar the new object is to the
existing one.

The more similar items you can find, and
knowledge as to whether the new item is stronger
or weaker than the similar items, will give
any reasonable person a really good guess as
to what the correct answer should be.
