could you look into what the deal is with Mitchell? He was a hard-nosed,
opionated, ball-buster...but other that that he seemed like a pretty
decent fellow (plus he got me my gig with the rangers, cleaning out the

Mitchell was a SEAL with a lot of attitude. No big deal, you ought to
know what BUD/S is like, you have to be a tough-minded sonofabitch to
even select for it, let alone _pass_ it.

But... he thinks he escaped from Aztlan a few months ago. He didn't. He
was captured (he turned back to try to get some of his men out, was
caught) and was given some faked memories and released in a carefully-
staged piece of theatre in Austin.


The idea was, he would be an agent for the Bad Guys. All unwitting, no
compulsion to do anything he found repugnant. Just file his full and
complete diaries where the Doctor (Mr Chief Bad Guy, if you didn't know)
could read them. A few cutouts and subroutines programmed into him, so
the Bad Guys could steer him in the right direction if needed. But they
couldn't mess with the core of the man. Pain-in-the-ass patriot to the
core, and you can't change that without breaking him.


It worked... sort of. The Doctor didn't know we could spot his
conditioning now.

We made Mitchell right away, but we let him run loose, kept an eye on
what he said, even modified it a little (like, when Haze almost killed
me, we had Jake edit the description of the headshot to make it sound
_much_ more lethal than it was even to a shapeshifter). That's why I had
to be so dead: we couldn't compromise the fact that Mitchell was blown.


Now? NIS botched arresting him and he's out on the streets running the
shadows. The Doctor's abandoned him, he's running loose. If Mitchell
pulls off a big score, maybe the Bad Guys will take him back.

Of course, he's still following his conditioning and writing his
diaries. Maybe if the Doctor recruits him... we'll get our lead as to
where and when to find him. So, we're leaving him loose.

If it doesn't work, we'll reel him in and decondition him. Arrogant
pain-in-the-ass or not, he's a good soldier and an honest man and we
can't waste talent like that. They didn't - _couldn't_ - bend him far,
we know how to unfuck his head and get him back on our side.

You ought to realise how sensitive all that is... so keep it to
yourself. But, anyone who Jason liked and who volunteered to clean up a
bug hive, surely knows how to keep his mouth shut.]<<<<<
