TERRORIST STRIKE ON ELITE-FORCE GENERAL FOILED

In a shocking attempt at a "first strike", in an almost unheard-of
attack in the Washington Federal Zone, heavily-armed terrorists carried
out one of the most blatantly violent assaults within that heavily-
policed district.

Brigadier-General Thomas Ernang, commander of the elite Fast Response
Action Group, was attacked as his automobile drove from the Capitol back
to the Pentagon. Although his vehicle was hit scores of times by banned
'cop-killer' armor-piercing bullets, by anti-tank rockets and by
explosive grenades, he was able to make his escape and to kill one of
the terrorists in doing so.

General Ernang, though, refused to claim credit for his survival. "I
didn't fire a shot. My second-in-command, Colonel McNally, returned fire
and forced me down low for my own safety, and my driver - Specialist
Grade Three Meltow - kept his head and got us out of danger despite
serious damage to the vehicle. And as we left, the two Federal Police
officers escorting me stayed and shot it out with the terrorists,
pistols against assault weapons, buying us time to get to safety. Both
of them were wounded protecting me, and I don't even know their names
yet."

This is the second serious terrorist incident in a matter of weeks,
following closely behind a short but vicious gun battle in Lafayette
Park that left several unidentified terrorists dead and several FBI and
Treasury Department agents wounded.

General Ernang, whose Fast Response Assault Group is tasked to respond
to terrorist events, refused to leap to judgement. "I cannot speculate
as to the identity of the terrorists, before a proper analysis is made.
Premature and irresponsible claims have been made and should not be
treated seriously. I do not accept the wild assertions that Sioux
extremists are conducting a campaign of political violence against the
UCAS."

When confronted with reports that the dead terrorist had been identified
as a Sioux national, the General remained adamant that no premature
decisions should be made. "Papers can be forged, identities
misrepresented. We must not be hasty."

Meanwhile, residents of the western states continue to report a rising
pitch of Sioux military activity along the border, and Pentagon sources
report no fewer than four divisions of Sioux military assembling along
the border in full combat formation.

When presented with this information, General Ernang refused comment,
saying "It's not a matter I am authorised to discuss." Pentagon
spokespersons likewise refused to express any opinion. A request for an
interview with the Secretary of State's press officer was denied without
explanation.
