PUYALLUP NIGHTSPOT DESTROYED AS GUN BATTLE RAGES
The 'Easy Eight' nightclub in North Tarislar, Puyallup, was left a bullet-
riddled burned-out shell after a vicious gun battle erupted in the Barrens
streets. About an hour after the last patrons left, a large number of
heavily-armed assailants launched an all-out attack on the building.

Reports are sketchy at best: police units did not enter the scene until
after dawn. Defending that delay, Captain Ronald Helmon said "Our
officers faced numerous enemies armed with automatic weapons, and it
was necessary to appraise the situation before intervening; and to enter
with sufficient strength."

Metahuman rights activists, though, suggested that the attack was racially
motivated and that the police response was inadequate. "If a Human-
owned nightclub in a Human district were under attack, Lone Star would
swarm in like flies to honey. It seems, once again, Elven life is cheap, and
the violent bigots will not forget that."

The Easy Eight was established in 2058, on the site of a strip joint and
brothel. It had already withstood a series of attacks by Humanis factions
and the Children of Thunda, and its owner (the enigmatic Julia Wolfe) was
rumoured to be linked to bodies as diverse as the Yakuza and the
Strategic Intelligence Gathering Agency. She was said to be deeply
unpopular in Puyallup's City Hall for her constant pressure to have proper
urban services provided to the taxpaying citizens of her region.

To many a hated foe, to others a beacon of hope, her disappearance and
the havoc wrought seem sure to trigger both reprisals and copycat action.
As investigators struggle to piece together what happened, southern
Seattle braces itself for a new round of racial violence.

+++++begin video

A dark grey Saab Dynamit slowly pulls into the long-abandoned parking lot
and slows to a stop. Across the lot is a black Nightsky limousine.
Visibility is just under 75 meters, with a low fog coming in off the Sound.
A mournful fog horn echoes through the damp evening.

The doors of the nightsky open and three men step out. All three appear
elven, but at this distance, Wraith cannot tell for sure. They begin to walk
slowly towards his Dynamit, motioning him to get out slowly with his hands
visible. He complies and steps out of his car, careful to leave it idleing
in case he needs to make a quick escape.

"Ah, Mr. Wraith," the taller of the three men says with a slight accent.
"You are exactly on time. Tanaka-san is pleased. Please, step this way." He
motions towards the waiting limo.

Wraith walks to the limo and then submits to a weapons check before the
elves allow him into the car. The elves wait outside patiently.

The interior of the car is comfortable, as to be expected from a limousine.
Wraith let his eyes adjust to the dimness and then settle upon the form of a
middle-aged Asian man sitting across from him.

"Shiro Tanaka?" Wraith asks expectantly, receiving a nod in response. "My
name is-"

"I know your name. You mentioned that you might have something for
me...something worth my time and this meeting?" Tanaka says quietly.

Wraith shifts uncomfortably as if not used to this directness.

"Um, well...yeah," he says after a brief pause. "I have some information
about a shipment of goods coming into Seattle in a few days and I would be
willing to exchange that for some help in dealing with Don Malone."

"Goods? What do you take me for, Mr. Wraith? I am not some sort of small
time 'fixer' here, as you would put it. What exactly are we talking about?"

"Okay, okay," he shrugs. "A certain truck will be carrying a prototype
chiip
design that is supposed to revolutionize the market. I figure something like
that should be worth a couple of million at least, and all I am asking for
is a little support for my trouble. What do you say?"

Tanaka sighs with a pained expression. "You are not giving me much to go on.
Why should I help you with your vendetta?"

"Because it would benefit you in the long run to be rid of someone like Don
Malone," Wraith states matter-of-factly.

Tanaka remains quiet for a moment and then knocks on the window. The door
opens and an elf offers a hand to Wraith. Wraith looks puzzled for a moment
before Tanaka continues.

"I will think over your offer, Wraith-san. You will hear from one of my
people within the next twenty-four hours. Good evening."

Wraith walks back to the Dynamit silently. The elves watch him as he climbs
into his car and drives away into the night.

L: And let me guess. The Serenity presence isn't doing much to slow the

D: No kidding.

L: How the _hell_ did this happen?

D: One possibility - if Easy _did_ rip you off, she's got the money to hire
that sort of presence for a _decade_ and still have change.

L: Bad way to get information...

D: Or it's just that she and Serenity have _always_ been tight.

L: Like some security outfit's gonna go out on a limb like that for an Elfie

D: This is Serenity.

L: Security outfits are all alike. Okay, the Don is talking to some people,
you should have some manoeuvre room soon. Use it. Forget quiet,
quiet's done with now. Just get Bartolo's turf under control. You got

D: I can't do jack with Serenity watching!

+++++begin video

L: I see you have problems.

D: That's putting it mildly.

L: And let me guess. The Serenity presence isn't doing much to slow the
hit-and-run attacks, but it's royally screwed your ability to retaliate.

L: Like some security outfit's gonna go out on a limb like that for an Elfie
razorbitch?

D: This is Serenity.

L: Security outfits are all alike. Okay, the Don is talking to some people,
you should have some manoeuvre room soon. Use it. Forget quiet,
quiet's done with now. Just get Bartolo's turf under control. You got
two weeks.

D: I can't do jack with Serenity watching!

L: That won't last, Eric. But you got to pull this off. Lots of people
watching you now. You win, we can calm things down. You lose...
someone's gonna take a long walk off a short plank. You get me?

M: Waiting for the Caballeros? They should be with you sometime

M: <Laughs> Ah, shit! You coping?

L: It's only money. _Your_ money. Enough money and you don't usually

M: And where money won't cut it, you'll have the Caballeros.

L: Yeah. I still think we'd do better keeping it quiet.

M: Noted, Lucky, and overruled. Okay? I am listening. I understand. But
right now, I got three options. Fight in Seattle and win. That's what I

five years down the pipe, it won't matter one Troy ounce of devil-rat

L: So far, yeah.

M: Fact is, Lucky, if I lose Seattle, I got people here in Vegas who might
decide I could be beaten in Vegas too. If I won't fight for Seattle maybe
I might not fight in Vegas either. Still with me?

L: Clear as crystal, boss.

M: But even if we fight and lose in Seattle, even if we get kicked out, if
we fight like fucking cornered rats and we leave scorched earth and
corpses behind us, that shows those people what happens if they fuck
with me in Vegas. And Vegas is where I live and Vegas is what matters.

You're smart, Lucky, you understand this yet?

L: Better to fight and lose than not to fight at all, right? Best of all to
fight and win.

M: You don't think you can win?

L: Depends. I wouldn't say it was certain. If I thought we were gonna lose
I'd tell you.

>>>>>[I guess CoT don't like hospitals.

Someone doesn't like CoT.

+++++begin news article
Justin Ballard-Watkins smiles for the camera. "Don, I'm at Settler's
Hospital in Tarislar, recently the scene of a brutal firebombing, yet
just now re-opened." The camera pans back to show the smoke-stained
building, lights glowing in several windows.

"This crash program of repair and reconstruction was undertaken by a
mercenary force whose headquarters are nearby, and who provided medical
personnel and combat engineers to make good the damage inflicted in the
last cowardly firebombing. What's even more impressive is that the only
cost to the hospital was the materials used: the mercenaries described
it as 'disaster relief training' and refused payment."

The camera cuts back to Ballard-Watkins, as he walks towards the
reception area. "Let's step inside Settler's Hospital, and see how -"

He's elbowed aside by two running soldiers, one of whom snaps "Get
inside!". Both are in combat gear and carry Alpha assault rifles with
practiced ease, as the reporter tries to hide his surprise.

"We seem to have a problem here, Don..." he says, breaking into a run to
get inside. The cameraman twists, catching the four nondescript vans as
they pull into the hospital parking lot: one accelerates towards the
hospital, the driver falling out and away, only to absorb half-a-dozen
minigrenades. The charge of ANFO inside explodes prematurely, with a
concussion that knocks the cameraman flat.

The other three vehicles are slowing and beginning to disgorge their
passengers, all of them armed Humans, when the two soldiers open up with
their assault rifles. The fire monentarily pins the attackers, evidently
unused to being under aimed automatic fire, but with only two defenders-

Four defenders, as two more soldiers emerge from Reception and find
cover behind the concrete planters that would have at least kept the van
bomb from entering the hospital, and add their fire to the defence.

Outnumbered four or five to one, they nevertheless have broken the
attack's momentum, and the cameraman takes the opportunity to crawl into
the hospital. Ballard-Watkins, inside, is clutching his arm, blood
oozing between his fingers: patients and staff (some of the staff in a
grey camouflage uniform that makes them look uncannily like fat tabby
cats) are in cover: and the cameraman cautiously peers outside.

The firefight seems to have reached stalemate: one van is sullenly
burning, several of the CoT attackers seem to have taken refuge in the
new crater left by their abortive van bomb, and the defenders are
keeping the terrorists busy without loss to themeselves, but can't close
with them to drive them off or kill them.

"Don, this is more exciting than we expected." Ballard-Watkins says
through gritted teeth. "It seems the cowardly Children of Thunda find
this hospital an irresistible target, and once again they launch a
ruthless attack on it. This time, though, the mercenaries who rebuilt it
have left a force to defend it, and they're holding the raiders off so
far. Now, it's a question of how long the Children will press their
attack for, and whether they have reinforcements -"

The three vans, and the men using them for cover, are suddenly speared
by a bright white light, as an amplified voice booms "DROP YOUR
WEAPONS!"

At least one of the CoT gunmen fires at the light, to be answered by a
deeper, booming drumroll: the vans and several of the men around them
are torn apart in a score of bright flashes. One of the men in the
crater throws a grenade, which explodes with a sharp crack: the response
is a burst of 30mm shellfire into the crater, silencing the occupants.

There is a pause as the echoes die away, and the eight-wheeled APC
advances cautiously, circling the vans for any signs of continued
resistance. Three men stagger clear, hands raised, as the amplified
voice booms at them to kneel with their hands behind their heads.

Another two of the grey-uniformed soldiers run through Reception, these
showing the signs of having been hastily roused from sleep. With six
soldiers - then seven - and the APC's brooding presence backing them,
the squad of Rebels are able to rapidly secure their prisoners.

"Well, Don, for once the good guys win a round here. A brutal attack on
a place of healing prevented, by a small team of elite troops. We'll
bring you more news as we get it. Now, I'm particularly pleased by the
hospital's salvation, since I need their attentions myself." Ballard-
Watkins manages a pale grin for the camera.
