>>>>>[OK, tell them the offer is appreciated, and can they have them
ready to roll. I can have an FRT available for their use if required.

Crawley, I want F&A to run an enhancement on the upper left grid of the
bomb view section of Thunda's post, there's something in that area, and
I want it enlarged and enhanced. The audio clip seems to indicate some
sort of machinery, at least it sounds like that to me, possibly air
condition or filtration, with something deeper running over it, see if
you can get an audio comparison with other machinery types and compare
the wave lengths if we get a match, I want to know what that machinery
is.

Second, call NITO, tell them we've had an offer of a team from ARES, and
see if they're prepared to liaise with them.

We came up blank last night, but I want to say thanks to the team, for
the hard work they put in. Looks like it's down to F&A to tell me where
this damn device is. The report from ARES confirms that the section of
canister we saw is indeed the housing of a Minuteman ICBM, they are sure
its from the top section of the missile, possibly the part immediately
below the warhead. The missile itself is way too large for Thunda to be
able to transport it anywhere without some serious vehicles, and a lot
of publicity. The warhead itself, wasn't in view in the camera shot,
but they agree it is highly unlikely that he has got hold of one. There
aren't any live nuclear weapons that are outside of deep storage within
Seattle city limits, most of them were removed or destroyed after the
fiasco earlier this century.

Right. I want most of you back out on the streets tonight, talk to
anybody that might know something, your vehicles have now been equipped
with the Grissom hardware, so you have full mobile access to essential
datastores. I want that bomb found, we're running out of time, and the
clock isn't waiting.

Kreutz, Hammond, I want you two to talk to Lone Star, pass over what
information we have concerning the drug/BTL auction that we've had wind
of, and find out what they know, also pass over the information we
acquired over the shake down, they may have some views on who is likely
to be able to afford this kind of purchase.

Barney, Charrinton, I still haven't had any feedback from forensics
regarding the bomb factory that Lynch took down, they must have some
information from that site, go up there and kick somebody's ass, I want
a report on my desk by morning. I also want the interview transcripts
taken during the interrogation of the suspects recovered from this site.
And find out what the results of the analysis were on that vehicle used
for the failed purchase of the routers.

The Tir is denying that this Cantelope character is one of theirs, and
we've yet to find a body. I should think that the body has long since
disappeared, so we may as well file that under pointless. FAO have come
up blank, as the Elven government just backpeddles and deviates, which
means, in my interpretation, somewhere in Seattle is a Tir strike team.
Anything, and I mean, anything, that is suspicious, and looks like it
may be linked to this case, must be called in. I don't want any of my
agents tangling with a Tir black ops team. We also have a growing
number of people associating with Lynch, including some members of the
Shadow community

+++++Include: Matrix.lst

Those are the people who have openly contacted Lynch in recent days, so
we can assume that they are active in the investigation. Watch out for
idiots out there on the streets people, we have a large number of
headless chickens and wannabees hurtling around Seattle at the moment,
all of them playing Lone Ranger. We can expect to start seeing corpses
lining up soon, as they start getting frustrated and take it out on
their "opposition". Lone Star already reports an increase in firefights
and casualties in some areas of Seattle. Thankfully they are well away
from the areas of our investigation, but they are beginning to put a
strain on Lone Star personnel, they are already stretched thin on the
ground now, with th increasing number of gunfights between the glory
seekers, the Star are beginning to feel the pressure. Some of their
officers have been on duty for double shifts, so when liaising with LSS
personnel, have a little patience with them, they've had as little if
not less sleep than we have. They're also under a lot of pressure, we
don't have a contract to worry about.

Marjorie, please get some air fresheners and some sort of purifying
system in here, the entire office is beginning to smell like a brawl
players changing room. Get on the phone to the contractors and find out
when they're coming in to set the equipment up.

It has been brought to my attention that a couple of other "independant"
security consultancies are becoming more involved in this case, which
boils down to the fact that there's a lot of activity crossing the
Thunda trail. This will have one of two effects, it'll destroy what
little trail there is, or highlight it in brilliant neon, I'm hoping the
latter, but let's be prepared for some serious hoofing about on this. I
also believe that other "concerned" parties have invested some manpower
as well. It means a lot of hours are taken up trying to collate this
information and try to make sure investigations don't cross paths, I
don't want any incidents arising from a lack of knowledge of who's on
the playing field. Pay particular attention to your personnel reports,
and check in regularly for updates, as we find out more about who's
involved, that information will be made available to you, so you don't
start chasing our allies up dark alleys. There's more than enough
confusion already.

Johnson, see if you can get a bearing on the lunatics who have set up
the Thunda public information boards, and get them to shut down some of
that operation, it's creating merry havoc in some areas of Seattle, and
if Thunda disappears into these areas there'll be a blood bath. Judging
by previous events, it's something he's likely to do. I dare say he'd
find it highly amusing to have Seattle's Shadowrunners kill themselves
in one glorious battle in Redmond or somewhere. I don't care how you do
it, just get some of those boards shut down. If you need extra
manpopwer, you have authorisation to utilise the resources of the Matrix
division in the Federal Building.

Agents Smith and Forcey, I want you to check through any major
contractors in the city who have recently been caled to shift heavy
equipment in the last 48 hours. It's a tall order, butwith any luck we
may be able to pin down truck movemnets and a target destination as a
likely possibility for Thunda's damn bomb.

Alright people, let's shake it.]<<<<<

>>>>>[ Thought you might interested that there are several kind of
loonies out there... see yourself. And this after the attacks on busses
just this morning...

+++++ Begin News Excerpt
You just see a news studio, a platin blonde newsspeaker in his early
twenties commenting, when the picture is already overlapped by a frame.
"...still no change in situation, even after eight hours of
negotiations," the newsspeaker's voice announces, while now a large
four-storey terminal building is visible, surrounded by dozens of
LoneStar vehicles of various builds, and several news- and
LS-helicopters occupying the airspace above it. While a caption
declares "King Street Station", you notice lots of LS troopers, most in
full combat gear. Several of them aim firearms at the building, while
others have their faceplates open and sip coffee. Among them, some
people in black jumpsuits are visible, carrying high-powered rifles,
and usually being paired in twos. They're fully masked, and usually
dissapear quickly from view when the camera centers on them.

"...But that will change now, George," an elven woman continues
smoothly. 'Verona Leibner', the caption reveals. "The situation is
even /worse/ then this morning, when several busses were captured.
Lone Star is under heavy pressure now, to achieve better results then
the /morning/. Many of the officers present were /also/ on duty those
few hours ago, and are thus /extremly/ tired.

"As the terrorists demanded when theybroke off communications 90
minutes ago, throwing a decapiated body -" the camera swings to the
main entrance of the station, where a bloody pool has made its way
from a headless corpse down the steps, then swings back - "there's now
permission from Captain Muller, the Lone Star officer in command, for
a newsteam to enter.

"And as you may have guessed, /we/ will be that team, me, my camera
man Frank here, and my sound- and light technican Alex Pobe -" The
camera shows the latest mentioned who waves uneasily, and a still of
Frank Doughes appears for a second, before Verona is in the center of
attention again, just an armored Lone Star cop arrives, saying: "If
you are ready, Mam..." His voice is distorted by the helmet, and does
really sounds somewhat tired, and Verona answers before turning fully
back to the camera. "Sure. We will be back after a short break...".

The TNN comercial logo appears.

+++++ Break: 148.6 sec

"...are now on the steps to King Station main entrance," Verona
Leibner reports, while the camera pans back to her from the corpse. A
few seconds later, Verona and her team are in front of the enormous
double doors of King station, rebuild after a fire in '53 in Victorian
style - pompous. Both doors are closed, but the right one slowly opens,
clearing a small gap. A person peers out, wearing a plastic mask
imitating Govoneur Schultz. A waving gesture invitates the news team
into the station, into...

Chaos. Torn books, crashed benches, spent cartridges litter the floor.
Several puddles of blood can be seen, and at least four corpses are on
the floor. "Oh, ye spirits, this /is/ unbelievable, ..."

Loud, speedy music booms through the hall - you are quite sure you can
make out a song by 'Killing Zone', a band that is played by some
independant radio stations after a minor scandal in the British' House
of Nobles. "As you can see, this station has turned into a war zone!
Now..."

The newsteam is met by five masked and armed people of undeterminable
gender. Two of them - masked as Theodore W. D. Winslow and Franklin
Yeats - suddenly grab the sound technican, Pobe, and drag him away from
the group, forcing him to his knees in front of the the observing
camera. "What are you..." Verona starts, but is interrupted by Marilyn
Schultz: "He's a cop. TNN doesn't send sound techs with their field
teams!" Marilyn's masculine voice states - "But," Alex Pobe starts, but
is rudly interrupted by Schultz' Ares Predator, which pinches a hole in
his forehead. As Valona audibily inhales, Marilyn places another two
rounds through the corpse's head, spreading most of it on the floor,
the plastic face unmoved.

"If you'd follow me..." Marilyn says, even her/his voice unmoved, and
waving across the room. The group follows him, leaving the technican's
body by the door, the terrorists flanking the reporters. While passing
the hall, several masked and armed (rather heavily armed, in fact) are
visible, positioned at strategically important places. Although lots of
empty beer cans, chip-holders and glass phials are spread near the
obviously hyper-active guards, they keep their rifles trained at their
objectives. Some others, maybe "off-duty", are dancing near the the
portable stereo, and screams from below indicate they also found other
recreational methods. Verona keeps chatting while crossing the hall.

The group is let through a corridor. To the right is a book shop, its
contents probably threwn in the main hall. Now it holds at least 25
people, tied at arms and legs, staring up to half a dozen frag grenades
hung from the ceiling. Two terrorists guard them from the corridor, and
opposit the shop's entrance an orkish Lone Star officer is nailed to
the wall, spread-eagled. "The pictures we can witness here are just
unbelievable. This officer seems to be still alive, his chest is
/moving/, ..."

They are led in a room. In a corner, several dead metahumans are piled,
at least eight corpses. Five people, clothes torn, and probably abused,
are chained to a desk. Only Marilyn Schultz and Franklin Yeats
accompany the newsteam in, the rest remains outside. Two terrorists
flank the desk. Frank Doughes zooms in on one of him. The only part
visible of them is there eyes, the rest is hidden by clowns' masks.
These eyes... are scary. Barely white, and the iris so unnaturally
enlarged one can't even guess their eye color.

Behind the desk, a large man is sitting. He's the only one so far
without a rubber mask, just dark sunglasses hide his eyes from the
camera. He's muscoulously built and wears Navy SEAL's camouflage
uniform. The nameplate reads "Jason X. Goldsmith." Verona stops her
seemingly endless talking as she sees this man. He seems to radiate
power with every pore.

"Welcome, world, to me small residence," the man states, making a
sweeping gesture. His deep, sonore voice would be great for channel's
achorman, but stands in rough contrast to the double SMGs that become
visible as 'Goldsmith' now stands up. "I have been given to understand
we are on air right now, dear?" he adresses Verona, who just stares,
then nods. "Good." he stands up, "then I can tell /you/ out there what
/our/ motivations are to be /here/," another sweeping gesture, and a
strange emphasize in his words, nearly hypnotic. 'Goldsmith' smiles at
the camera.

"I know we are being labeled 'terrorists' by the corporation Lone Star,
and 'madmen' by the government neck-breakers. But we are not. /Listen/.
_We_ _are_ _not_! We are just a group of humans who are both concerned
and shocked by the affairs how this nation is led, this nation that
once was great, the proud nation of our parents.

"/Concerned/, as humans can't walk down a single street anymore without
being harrassed by foul, mutant creatures who are unwilling to work,
and thus beg and steal!

"/Concerned/, as our government sells the citizens of our proud nation
to japanese Corporations, subjects them to the strange concepts the
Nippons take as law, instead of defending those citizens against the
foul threats.

"And we are outright /shocked/ how far this, _our_, country has bowed
its head to its new masters. When one man, one human man, stood up and
tried to question the treacherous doings of the people and /creatures/
that call themselves our government, _he_ _was_ _killed_. Killed.

"Listen, proud people in a once-proud country, he was killed by
governemt-payed killers."

Finally Verona Leibner manages to catch up with events, and throws in,
"You are referring to the Thunda-affair, don't..."

"Yes, of course," 'Goldsmith' shows a beaming, photogen smile to both
Verona and the camera. "And the foul murder on the representative of
People's League, Abraham Smith. And several others who have been
silenced by a bullet. The government hires killers, and those killers
boasts their dirty work on an illegal matrix network. /Qui custos
custodes?/ they say, 'Who watches the watchers?'. Well. We do. /We/ are
here.

"And now /we/, the Children of Thunda, demand the traitors show up and
take responsibility for their doings. We have seen what happens if
someone tries to appeal the corrupt courts in this country: He's
assassinated. When Abraham was killed, this was proven.

"Thus we /had/ to take hostages. CoT assambled a strike team, and we
entered King Station. Unfortunately, we were attacked, thus the planned
unbloody move turned into fight. Several orks and trolls, led by
so-called shadowrunning elves, started shooting at innocents and
looting from shops. Those criminals have been taken in custody, away
from humans, and those who have been found guilty have been brought to
justice."

'Goldsmith' pauses a second, seemingly lost in thought, or possibly
listening to some cyberradio, then continues: "What you, out there at
the screens - I am told this transmission just beat the rates of
'Confession of a Company Man', hello, out there - and of course those
who still dare to call themselves 'police' are interested in most -
'What do they /want/?'

"Well, I am here to tell you. Children of Thunda demands the
governmental killers, like thos of the killer agency SIGA, to leave the
grey shadows of semi-legalities, and appear /here/. Here, where they
will answer our questions about the foul murder he commited, hiring
known criminals as the elven killer Easy, and his involvement in
Abraham Smith's death.

"Thus, we will keep these criminal metahuman criminals, and the human
prisoners of war, until Jason Running Wolf Lynch is delivered to King
Station's main entrance, handcuffed.

"Although we hate to do so, we are willing to show our determination.
We will start by executing those hostages who have been found guilty of
crimes - like theft, violence against humans, or resistance - but are
determined to sacrifice every hostage we were forced to take. This can
be understood as ultimatum - starting _now_." He glances at an
expensive looking wrist watch. "At 17:12 we will execute our first
prisoner. The only way to save him, is to deliver the criminal Lynch to
justice."

Verona is about to ask questions, when suddenly the picture dissolves
in static. For a few seconds voices can still be heared - "What are you
- " "Keep your fingers - " "HEY!" "Please stay calm, nothing
will
happen to..." - then there's just silence.

The platin-blonde newsspeaker re-appers, talking fast. "We don't know
yet what happened inside King Station, that is /still/ held hostage
after 8 and a half hour, but the life sign monitors of Verona and Frank
both indicate they're unharmed. We will report more on this act of
terrorism as soon as we get the news - and we'll be the first ones to
get them. TNN brings you the news!"

The TNN comercial logo appears.

Unfortunately, good ol' George was wrong. Lone Star obviously assumed
they were too involved, and thus had a Chanel 3 team with them when
they charged at 17:02. You may have heard it: It was a total failure.
The station was "freed" at the expense of 37 FRT- and SWAT-coppers, all
terrorists, and 141 hostages. Only 15 hostages - all human - were
rescued, both the C3 and TNN camera team were either seriously wounded
or KIA. The material shot by them is in a LS vault - and I mean
vault: Offline. Unclear up to date is how far the special FBI team present was
involved, if they participated in the attack, and what was their role in
the debakle. Why the explosives the terrorists had deployed didn't
go BOOOM also isn't clear yet - probably even those fools were not
crazy enough to blast the station to moon and back. ]<<<<<

>>>>>[Hi there, Trevor. Sorry it took a while to answer, things got
busy, then I was in hospital. One (well, four cuts, but one attack)
razor wound in my leg, and the doctors were talking about amputation for
a while, the infection was so severe. Puyallup sewer ooze probably
qualifies as an illegal biological weapon, maybe we can get a UN
commission to clean it up for us? <g>

After I persuaded them that I disapproved of prophylactic amputation,
they compromised on shoving me in a nanite tank where some supercharged
bacteriophages are using the infections in my leg as snack food. I'm
sort of thinking about your last message as well as recent events, and
I've got a headful of painkillers and metabolic boosters, so excuse me
if I don't always sound totally coherent or concise.

If you think it'll do any good, I can't kick ass myself in DC, but I've
got a boss who can, and a massively ambitious general on my Oversight
Committee. You want me to pitch it to him that releasing Achilles would
boost his status, I will, that should rattle some bars, though after
today and the news coverage I don't see much resistance to Achilles
gettting involved. Except maybe from Lone Star, if we don't do something
about that media coverage.

What got done to our suicide bombers? Have you read the full SIGA file?
(The hard copy you have to sign out and read in place in the Hoover
Building, not the santised version that you can pull via network?) Even
if you haven't, you probably know the technical side. Ladder and
biofeedback, implanted memories boosted by serious psychoactive
chemicals. I'd suggest an old acquaintance of ours might be involved
here, except I don't see how this sort of operation serves the good
Doctor's ends at all. It boosts the forces opposing him some, it makes
it a lot easier to get sanction for paralegal operations (like a lot of
the stuff SIGA does), and yet the memory of how Goldsmith's outfit
turned one Fed means your and our selection procedures are as airtight
as they can be made. The technique is similar, but the Doctor doesn't
usually like publicity, while these guys are seeking it out as much as
possible..

And lay off the typist jokes, Trevor <g> You guys are law enforcement
officers, Lilith and I are military, and our "investgative" skills tend
to consist of either other people collating data in DC and forwarding
it, or else we do illegal interrogation like Lilith asking some suspect
questions while I dangle him out of a high window by one ankle. (It gets
results, but it's hard to prosecute properly afterwards). We rely on you
to find out where to go in order to kill Bad Guys and break things, plus
we've seen you in action.

The Sons of Freedom? I'd guess they were fairly clean. Might or might
not be linked. Maybe they're just taking advantage of crazytime to pull
their ops. A while back we had the Sword of God, the Muffin Man, the
Hand of Glory, all coming out with maniacal massacre plans. SoG was
militant Humanis, Muffin Man was someones wind-up-and-go cyberkiller - a
prototype Thunda, maybe? Never thought to check that out - and the Hand
of Glory were just a recruitment tool Aztlan used to get me to stick my
head into an InterPol trap.

You want my honest conclusion from the Sons of Freedom? I've had time to
look at all of them in this damn tank. It was a setup, and I'm involved
somehow. None of them collected the money, Everett never even asked for
any. They all started killing within half an hour of each other, all
well within their various deadlines, they all went mobile within a few
minutes of each other, they all all used near-identical escape routes.
It's almost as though the only point of each hijack was the massacre.

The Everett group moved and acted like professionals, even down to when
they killed the hostages: fast, precise, efficient, hardly a wasted
round. Their demands and rants were very slick, too slick almost. Looked
like five pros, used to working together, and three outsiders with less
competence who were basically for menace and sniper bait. They also took
out the bus security camera right away. They left three hostages alive,
the three that were under ten years old, killed everyone else.

Auburn was a horrorshow, see the news tape: the guy doesn't really know
what his group wants, just media attention and money. When they pushed
him on the "Sons of Freedom" part, blam, he shot the newscrew rather
than answer questions. The same guy killed the hostages, solo, hose job
with a HVAR. His team didn't participate, and though LS-Auburn forced
their way right into Redmond to follow, it was all over too fast for
them to react. They took four girls away before the massacre, no sight
or sign of them yet, but I'll bet we never see them alive again. All
good-looking, aged thirteen or fourteen, guess we know what they wanted
them for.

Renton, like Auburn with the mayhem turned down a few notches. More
coherent political statements, Fewer casualties during the hit, just as
many afterwards. Again, they left the camera, they took six women away
before they torched the bus with WP grenades and shot everyone coming
out. Again, not likely those women will be seen again, not even dead,
not in Redmond.

Tacoma, now that's interesting. Whoever set it up, hired Matthew Van
Holde, aka Ronin, to lead a team, and while he's quite willing to kill,
he's not known for a fondness to murder unarmed civilians en masse...
From what I saw at the end, he was going to leave the hostages alive,
the guys covering the escape route didn't like that, and his men got
greedy. Then we joined in. As if it were set up so there'd be
distraction at the end, and us or a SWAT team could make a move and save
the hostages: we only lost four killed, three in the initial rush and
one in the crossfire af the end.

And Tacoma was nice and handy from Fort Lewis, and I was in the South
Tacoma station talking to Greenbaum when the call came in, and there was
no trouble at all from them about my involvement.

It's as if Tacoma were planned as one that there would be survivors
from. Lilith and I get involved. The day is saved, whether by me or by
LS-Tacoma, but even if the Star solve it themselves end-to-end then
"Federal officers assisted throughout". And then the right spin gets put
on it by a few media flacks. As if someone _wanted_ Achilles involved
and Lone Star discredited.

Let's maybe run down the sources of some of the livelier articles
blaming the cops for everything and hailing Federal officers as heroes?
See what or who sparked that particular slant on the story.

And - gut feeling - we back up Lone Star on this? Maybe the whole point
of this op was to get the Star pissed off at Federal cowboys who get
lucky breaks and get called heroes for it, while cops doing it right and
by the book get slammed...

That's a _good_ reason for the op, actually. Could be the Bad Guys(TM)
just want to put a wedge between the Star and the FBI, pound on it some,
and then work in the cracks that opens up?

I nearly forgot, tell Chris he wins the bet, he'll know what I mean.
After I used the L7 in action, I think I'll hang onto it for the rest of
this operation. It works.

Oh, damn, medication time again, and I can't even see if the nurse is
good-looking or not. Better shut this down while I'm still vaguely
coherent...]<<<<<

I'll mention the UN clean up team next time I'm talking to the Director,
maybe something _could_ be arranged. Though it's likely that the UN will
condemn it and request a thermonuclear clear out.

It appears that today's series of events has made life a little sticky
for Lone Star. Their failure at Kings, the bus incidents, a jewel heist
in Everett resulting in five fatalities, two of them officers, plus the
usual spate of lootings and robberies, muggings and killings that are
staple diet for Seattle seems to be having a detrimental effect on their
popularity. We've had the Commissioner, the Mayors of six districts,
Seneca, and half a dozen other politicians on the phone demanding to
speak to D'Arkan, damn I wish I was a little more - diplomatic, seems
that my attitude is not too savoury. They're all screaming for blood,
miracles and someone to take the heat. You didn't help matters by
steaming in and saving the bus, but I'll get onto that later. The long
and short of it is, that we now have permission, direct from DC to do
what we damn well please when it is necessary. As a naval captain once
said shortly before he was blown out of the water. "Full steam ahead,
and damn the torpedoes." Chris should return tomorrow, which means
there'll be someone here capable of dealing with this, and the incessant
screaching of political careers on shaky foundations.

We can't do a lot about the media coverage, free speech and all that
shit. However, there is something in the pipeline that may take the heat
off Lone Star and leave us with a favourable result. Seems that Chris
is going to suggest to the Mayor that LS are allowed to train teams with
the military for "urban clearance". Create a few special response
squads of their own. Hell, we might even be able to sell them some of
the artillery we bought in from ILS, and make a profit on it.

No, I've not read the file. It's been a while since I was present in
DC, though I'm, due to go up there for promotion assessment and exams
next month. If I make it, I should earn a few more cents for a days
typing. <g> We've had the autopsies back on some of the bodies and
they've proved most interesting, you're not far wrong on the
psychoactive drugs and an interesting coctail of other chemicals,
including a small control chip that works much like the pleasure/pain
experiments the lab coats put rats through. Seems like when these
people get something right their pleasure centre is stimulated with just
the right amount of endorphins. They virtually orgasm from the
pleasure, when they do something wrong, the pain is excruciating. Small
unit, very nicely put together by a large company from Japan that
specialises in simsense - I'm sure you can guess which one. The ones
we've recovered have been modified by some private hack, we presented it
to Fuchi and they denied it was their work - but would I like to leave
one there for analysis. Yeah right, and in six months they hit the
market, I don't think so. An unwritten warning has been placed at the
feet of Fujiyama Kensoto that if anything like these articles is found
on the streets with their stamp on it, certain diplomatic immunities
might be revoked. I think they heard.

Not sure on the involvement of your Doctor though. this work is a
little to dramatic for that particular fish, or his buddies. But, one
never can tell with these meglomaniacal types. We've checked the usual
channels, and nothing. So, it's time to go stir up the poor schleps on
the street again. Kick a few snitches, play hard man with the fences
and some of the dealers. Maybe we'll turn up something that way, though
somehow I doubt it, there's something very strange with this current
spate of lunacy. It's so pointless.

Lookit. First some dork takes a fire tower in SeaTac, then some bombed
out bimbo starts making demands in the departure lounge, both wind up
dead without actually achieving anything. Another attack destroys a
couple of buildings and injures a bunch of people, again, not actually
achieving anything. We get a memo from DC saying, go out and find
something to do but leave the bombings alone. Then a bunch of
Greyhounds get themselves taken, the suppressive systems mounted on
these beasts of the road forgotten or bypassed or ineffective - I mean
what the hell is the point in CS gas and the other shit if the driver
can't operate it? On top of this, someone calling themselves Jason X
Goldsmith - cute huh? Not only that, but if you watch the trid take of
this loon, he's close, oh so very close, that certain people in City
Hall are seriously crapped out. (From what we can gather he and two
others escaped from Kings during the slaughter. What does he want?
You, in front of him, on trial, and he's convincing and charismatic, and
he's Thunda's fucking twin brother. So guess what I got on the phone
this evening. The governor and Seneca street demanding the footage of
the cluster fuck at the steel works, and hard evidence that Thunda's
dead. They got it, but it wasn't easy. Firmly convinced that J R W
Lynch is a fraggin fraud and that he didn't kill Thunda, and all that
reward money that Chris forked over to the shady characters helping us
was misappropriated. Jeez, was that a fun time. I want to know how the
fuck Chris stays so cool at these times. All I wanted to do was start
breaking bones. Damn but they're short minded ungrateful buggers.

Now, I don't know about you, but it's all a little suspicious. I'm
curious to know why DC was so insistent that we don't get involved in
the damned bombings. Isn't that one of the reasons for our existence?

I tend to agree that you're being set up. For several reasons. First,
everything is a little too pat. You're absent and can't defend yourself
so accusations start muttering their way into the media. Achilles gets
hit, hopefully to... well we figure it was an attempt to cut the head
off a proactive force, you come steaming into the picture - convenient
huh? Then we get a series of crazies demanding that you are put to
trial for the illegal killing of a rabid dog. OK, they've got a case.
thunda was beaten, was it necessary to kill him? It might take a couple
of months of court time but we can provide sufficient evidence that
"yes, the action was necessary", but what's that all going to achieve?
Well, it'll tie up a hell of a lot of resources for some time. Now we
get a bunch of hijacks that make no sense at all, wholesale slaughter
for no reason other than they can, and finally, to cap it all off, we
get Mr. Lookalike. But does he start indulging in the great rant of his
ancestor? Nope, he demands your presence at a kangaroo court, then
proceeds to entertain Lone Star in one of the most brutal firefights
I've seen in quite a while. What happened? Lone Star forgot the
lessons they learned with Jaxon T Goldsmith and repeated them with Jason
X. What happens next. The politicians get all uppity, suddenly their
nice, secure, well padded backsides are on the slipperly slide to shit
creek. They want someone's ass to chew out. Guess who that's going to
be. Well, we prepared for an onslaught of accusations last year, so it
was a simple matter to dig all that out of the closet, brush off the
dust and lay the whole kit at the feet of the wobblers. Certain CEO's
of concerned corporations have been lighting up the switchboard at
Seneca, they've been passing it down to us, and then the Director calls.
he wants an explanation, a situation analysis and projections, and at
the same time transmits a nice cute little message saying we are to go
fully active. "Go out there and get some bad guys for me." Jeez, who
does he think he is, John Wayne?

We've got very little to go on for any of these events, we've got a
whole bunch of corpses sitting down at city morgue, the coroners office
is working overtime hacking the stiffs apart to find out who, what,
where, when, why, and maybe give us something we don't know. The
governor wants Seneca to flood the streets with agents and get the
murderous scum who killed the innocent citizens in the buses and then of
course there's the bombs. First of all we aren't allowed to do
anything, then, when it's virtually over bar the shouting, they scream
for help, and let us loose on what - the debris. Well, I've got some
news for these people, there's going to be more debris. And not all of
it is going to come from the terrorists we're entertaining. Some of it
is going to come from the public, and it's squishy, brown and smelly,
with an inexplicable affinity for cooling fans, and should land around
about election time. The media circus that's occuring at the moment,
would be amusing if it wasn't so damned hostile. We've had twleve crews
camped outside for nearly 18 hours now, demanding results, demanding
information, and after that one loon shot a couple, demanding
protection. I can just see it now. We leave the compound, move into
the streets to sort out the bad guys, followed by media teams with dinky
little cameras and light sets to show the adoring public exactly how
they're being protected.

If one of those women turns up, and we get to her before the wildlife, I
promise you, we'll get the bastards that took them. I personally want
to speak to the gentleman with the HVAR, who killed a camera crew out of
sheer petulance and appears to have toasted the whole damn busload of
people. Regarding your other comments, have you looked at this another
way?

Tacoma was a setup. OK, let's work from this. The /infamous/ Lynch is
involved in it, courtesy of the FBI/SIGA, "...federal agents
successfully prevented a fourth slaughter..." blah blah. Everyone is
happy, until some reactive newsie looks at things and asks "Was this
staged by the FBI/Lynch/SIGA/Governor/whomever to grab attention and
justify Achilles. Or did someone simply misjudge. If we extrapolate a
little, and assume that the Sons of Freedom were hired Shadowrunners,
that might explain the similarity of escape routes and the varied
amounts of reactionary killings. It strikes me that if this was a valid
group of terrorists, then some things would have been vastly different,
including the release of certain radical extremists. This was not a
standard terrorist operation, it didn't follow the classic lines of one,
it didn't adhere to certain paths and regulations they all follow, and
there was no coherant demand followed by slaughter as a result of those
demands not being met, there was also no negotiation - none. And that
doesn't follow the great psychological book of terrorism.

Whether the point of the exercise was to drag you into the limelight or
to cover another operation, or simply to create mayhem in the political
and corporate ranks I can't even begin to guess, but the buses at least
were not normal terrorist actions.

In order to obtain the maximum results from the psychological operations
in terrorist actions, every combatant should be as highly motivated to
carry out propaganda face to face as he is a combatant. This means that
the individual political awareness of the terrorist of the reason for
his struggle will be as acute as his ability to fight. Such a political
awareness and motivation is obtained through the dynamic of groups and
self-criticism, as a standard method of instruction for the terrorist
training and operations. Group discussions raise the spirit and improve
the unity of thought of the terrorist squads and exercise social
pressure on the weak members to carry out a better role in future
training or in combative action. Self-criticism is in terms of one's
contribution or defects in his contribution to the cause, to the
movement, the struggle, etc.; and gives a positive individual commitment
to the mission of the group. The desired result is a terrorist who can
persuasively justify his actions when he comes into contact with any
member of the "People", and especially with himself and his fellow
terrorist in dealing with the vicissitudes of terrorist warfare. This
means that every terrorist will be persuasive in his face-to-face
communication - propagandist-combatant - in his contact with the people;
he should be able to give 5 or 10 logical reasons why, for example, a
peasant should give him cloth, needle and thread to mend his clothes.
When the terrorist behaves in this manner, enemy propaganda will never
succeed in making him an enemy in the eyes of the people. It also means
that hunger, cold, fatigue and insecurity will have a meaning,
psychologically, in the cause of the struggle due to his constant
orientation.

Now, what part of that fits the events over the last few days?

I'll tell Chris he wins the bet. He's likely to want to attend a
debrief anyway, you know what he's like, he prefers to hear people talk
about incidents than read about them - he seems to get more from it that
way. For what it's worth, Achilles has been officialy launched, and
we're now cruising on our maiden voyage. Thank god the diplomat is
coming home, I am no good at this negotiation. Placating politicians
and irate corporate fat cats doesn't sit too well with me, when it's
their greed and negligence that causes these situations. Wooo, listen to
me, anyone'd think I was a dissident.

Did you know that Schultz renegotiated the Lone Star contract back in
56, and LS reduced the cost to the city? It's amazing they can carry
off any kind of policing at all. Why not pay these guys sensible money
for their time and get a decent effective force on the streets? hell,
why am I asking you? You've probably asked the same thing yourself a
few times.

Van Holde's a smart cookie, he was corp security for a long time before
he was a runner, he knows where the weak spots in any armour will be.
Ballistic weave doesn't do well against sharp pointy stuff, and there
are some places that you just can't put rigid inserts. Think me lucky he
didn't get my Achilles tendon, that would have been painful as well as
ironic and even with the medics at Seattle General it would have put me
out of action for days, not hours...

Control chips in the King Street muscle. That, if you want my opinion,
rules out our renegade Doctor, he's got a deeply ingrained disdain for
cybernetics. The dead guys from the bus hijack didn't seem to be wired,
programmed, or anything else except jazzed on Kamikaze, another reason
to thank IWS. That hints there's no link, or the link's well hidden.

Agree on the pointlessness of it all. Lilith had an idea, though, our
maniac shooter from Auburn carried an Ares HVAR, and those are far from
common on the street. In fact, there's only one person who's _mentioned_
the HVAR on Shadowland in the last year, a runner by the name of Haze.
We figured we'd go cut loose on suppliers and sources, see what we can
shake loose. Haze is kind of an enigma, we don't have much on him, but
we'll see what we can do.

About the terrorism... is that Mao you're quoting? Sounds familiar. Like
I said, I had a nagging disquiet that a terrorist didn't have a spiel
ready for the media. You come out with chapter and verse on insurgent
warfare, which is meant to be one of my specialities <g> And it doesn't
fit, either comparing CoT with the Sons of Freedom, or either with usual
terrorism. That's one reason we're going looking for our psycho with the
HVAR, it's easier to figure out.

And I goosed Doctor Rains-At-Sunset, and she threatened to put me under
on a Thorazine drip for a week, and that was the end of that

This van Holde you have in custody. A security guard before he went bad
huh? Ok, we would very much like a word with the gentleman. Preferably
at leisure. The fact that he turned against the kidnappers towards the
end will of course be taken into consideration but he may be aware of
things that he doesn't know he knows. We have ways of extracting that
information. If there is a problem with this I suggest you take it up
with Chris, he'll be back this evening. Until then consider this a
formal request. I'll send the paperwork to your Director within the
hour.

If the Doctor and his associates aren't involved, that opens the field
somewhat, and in a way makes life a little simpler. All we need to do
is find an ambitious bastard with delusions of grandeur who wants
multiple deaths without consequence. We're ploughing through the list
of dead and injured, trying to find any link that'll suggest the hit was
for a reason, and that someone on the bus was important in some way.
Guess what, so far - zip. What's the point in kidnapping four
greyhounds, holding the people at gunpoint, demanding money, with no
demands, no political statement, no logic, and in the end, no money to
speak of. just a body count. Well, if you can identify the fragger in
Auburn, and his whereabouts, let me know. That's one fuckwit who ain't
going to enjoy his earnings, or his liberty. We haven't had much chance
to monitor the bulletin boards of late, our matrix division has been
busy setting up the new accounts and datastores. I'll get one of them
to run a search through Hoover's datafortress and see what they can find
on Haze. If he's a fan of the HVAR, maybe he's got some rep somewhere,
and a rap sheet that'll give us some badly needed information. If
you're right, his days are numbered. I know a few lifers who might like
to show him what gang rape feels like.

No Jason, that's not Mao. C'mon guy, you should've attended the same
classes. General Malcom DuRenier, Psychological Operations in
Terrorism and Guerilla Warfare. Standard fare and essential reading for
us anti nutcase types. It's actually surprising how much of that
document can be attuned to criminals in general as well. Well, I'm off
to do some more of that thing we do so well - no not typing, research.
This puzzle is irritating. It shows all the hallmarks of planning, of
purpose, except that it is so hairbrained and disjointed that whomever
planned it, obviously intended the whole thing would fall apart. It's
too messy to be professional, but too tight to be amateur. Again, we're
running the parameters through the datastores, see if we can get a match
to some of the details, maybe they'll flag up with some comparison.

Oh yeah, thanks for the Nurse. What's the matter anyway, don't you like
Thorazine? I've heard it's quite relaxing. :)

I'd like to speak to Van Holde first when the medics let us at him, but
by that I mean ten or fifteen minutes: after that, he's yours to ask
what you will. If I'm out of contact when he's made available, then
there's no point wasting time, get the thumbscrews out right away.

We need to think what to do with him after he's been squeezed, it would
be a waste to rip his cyber and sling him in The Hole if there's a
usable alternative (though that still may be necessary). There's a few
options that get some productive use out of him, depends on a lot of
things.

The bus hits are an anomaly, and they don't fit the Doctor's style. Not
a fundraiser, they made no real effort to get the ransom. Not a
splatterjob to hide a personnel switch, we've got good IDs on the
bodies. Too noisy and public to be a targeted assassination.

Any funny business going on in the bus trade? Price wars, service
problems, the sort of scenario that might make "splatter the competition
and scare passengers away from them and onto us" attractive? This could
be simple commercial greed, opportunistic timing?

Lilith and I are working a fairly short list of suppliers for black-
market HVARs. They're scarce, and unusual, and that's our best lead. We
know a few people who might share what they know, a couple of pointers
to others, a company suit we're going to have to intimidate, and two
HVAR-owners who've contacted us to say "wasn't me" and are willing to
provide proof as long as we turn a blind eye to their illegal possession
of the weapons. Fair enough, provided both pass on where they bought the
things.

I don't expect the guy to be taken alive. If we find him, He's going to
resist arrest and be killed in the resulting firefight. That's almost
certanly true anyway, but I don't see the point of bringing this guy in
alive so he can waste a couple of months and a few million on a trial,
which he might get acquitted at (we don't have and probably won't have
_courtroom_ proof...)

As for the terrorism thing... guilty, guilty, I knew the gist but didn't
remember the source. I do more of the fieldwork, less of the high-level
planning, but you still need to know that the insurgents depend on
_your_ mistakes and cruelties to recruit the locals to their cause, so
the locals consider it better to help you than the rebels (or at least
to refuse aid to the insurgents...) Compare the British in Malaya,
Indonesia and Brunei to the French and then US in Vietnam, for instance
- actually, don't, or I'll be riding one of my favourite hobbyhorses
from now until forever.

I'm having to do some catchup here, I've not had a chance to read the

office, 0830, and don't you be a minute late. You know I get irritable
if I don't get my beauty sleep. Bring Ronin in for questioning the
second he wakes up. You want to talk to him Jason, fine, but you're
going to have to do it here. I'll have a medical team on stand by in
case he gets too excited.

I'm not impressed gentleman. I leave the city for a little R&R and what
do I find out? That some nasty little scag is trying to clear some areas
for new development. A bunch of buses get themselves redecorated in the
blood of people we're paid to protect, and there's a bunch of memo's on
my damn desk from some lunatic in Washington who wants Achilles to paint
the town red.

Johnson, I want a full log of the phone calls for the last six days.
Arrange meetings with the Governor, the Mayor of the affected districts
and Lone Star Commissioner.

Lynch, I want to know exactly what you're doing. Think yourself lucky
you work for someone else, if it was me I'd pull you off the streets and
hide you in a deep hole for a while. If you go anywhere in Seattle I
want a trace on you, so we know precisely where you are in case some
slitch decides you might make a tasty morsel for a Bouef Bourginon.

As for Ronin, he was present at the murder of five civilians. He will
serve time. There is no need to rip out his cyber, they have a
wonderful new device recently out of CIA research labs that allows us to
install a small implant preventing him from employing any cyber
implants. He'll wear that for the length of his incarceration. He
would appear from what I've seen to have assisted in the freeing of the
remaining hostages, so I'll make certain his sentence reflects that.
I'm sorry Jason, but we have no use for ex-guards who find the
attraction of money running the shadows more attractive than lawful
employment. He betrayed his employment when he turned to the
underworld, there were other things he could have done. If he is close
to you in any way, I suggest you contact your director and explore the
possibility that SIGA might be able to use him. That's the only way, If
SIGA make the necessary moves, I can arrange for an obstacle to plant
itself in the way of Federal interest, otherwise he goes down. Murder
One.

One thing though. If SIGA take him under their wing, and he is seen
operating in the shadows without their sanction, I will bury him.

I can't comment on the bus incidents or the bombings until I've read the
logs and watched whatever video we have. But I can think of one clear
link to the Doctor. You and Lillith. Who saved the day in Tacoma
Jason? Who guided the hand of the star? Who met an old acquaintance?
Who's area fell apart so conveniently? I suggest you look very
carefully at this. I would suggest it stinks of your old adversary.
There is a reason for this, and you know what it is, you just haven't
opened that door yet.

Don't waste your time checking the black market for HVARs. I have that
information on file already. There was an incident in Snohomish that
used one in November '58. I ran a check back then, we have information
concerning two suppliers and one shipper. Check them out first.

You want to reminisce about ancient history Jason, fine, meet me for a
drink and we'll argue somantics for a few hours, Johnson might learn
something but anything prior to 2025 is pre-history for him.

I want to talk to you about the latest series of incidents but I don't
want Lillith present when we do so. She might not react too well to the
direction of the conversation, and this partly involves an incident the
pair of you got involved in recently over some imagined slight on a BBS.

*****EYES ONLY: SASIC T Johnson

I want a full breakdown and analysis of the events surrounding the
successful attack on the bus in Tacoma. Minute by minute footage from
trafficams, media and Lone Star tapes, especially the section concerning
Lynch's attack. I also want traffic surveillance tapes of the area and
any aerial recordings made during the period of the incident. I also
want information on the bodies that were found at the scene and any of
the gunmen that have been identified.

I want as much information as we can dig up on a Sioux Agent. Anne
"Running Dear" Chukatis, primarily her time in service, known or
associated operations and a precis on her background. If a full bio is
available that would be neat as well.

I've handed the datachip acquired from Special Agent Danforthe, the
Sioux are making arrangements to extract him now. He should be back in
Seattle by tomorrow evening. I want two agents back in Portland by the
end of the month. Deeper and better placed this time. You'll
understand when you read the transcript I've sent to Washington. If
what the man has discovered is correct /we/ and a few other places are
in deep shit.

I want _everything_ we have on COT, and their militant wing. And I mean
EVERYTHING.

And make sure there's fresh coffee in my office tomorrow, if I have to
drink soycaf or that freeze dried crap any more I'm going to shoot
someone.

Jason, you've been a bad boy, and taken a risk that should have stuck a
rocket under your ass so big you'd be shitting sparks for the next year.
There's a bunch of lunatics out there demanding you on a plate, and you
walk straight into a situation that might well have been an elaborate
set up. I appreciate that you have little regard for your life. But
while you are on detachment to this department you will do everything
you can to keep your ass out of a sling and save me having to fill in
5000 forms in triplicate to your boss because we can't find all of your
body after some scag has decapitated it.

You want to play hero? Fine, but think about it first.

OK, enough of the irate precinct captain. I've read the "friendly" file
on Farmer, and his cronies. I want the meat of that booklet. Talk to
Coppinger, talk to God and Satan if you have to, but I want everything
you've got on these characters. If they're involved as you first
suspected then something will give way. I suspect it's been a while
since you read that file as well. Do so, something might click, refresh
your memory about things you'd rather forget, just remember that Lillith
might not appreciate it much. We're not going to catch the financers of
this little fiasco by kicking up a storm in the streets. This is going
to be a hard slog through a few reams of paperwork.

****End encrypted passages.

I want a plot of the bombings and other known terrorist activities over
the last two years, overlay the latest series of bombings and let's see
if there's a pattern. I want as much information as we can get on Jason
X. I have few explanations to offer DC, and they're rather eager to
hear something. I also want all reports of any significant events that
have occured within the last week, by significant I mean anything more
profitable than a liquor store, and I want that overlaid with the
bombings and hostage situations.

Even in this rat-hole, slavers operate cautiously, and I must gently,
subtly coax Dumont into seeking me. So, I went alone: this is not
something that the exuberant violence of my friends would help with yet.

I have slowly, gradually, made several contacts, several acquaintances.
I seek a dozen or two assorted bodies, and the men to whom I have spoken
assume it is for some corporate medical experimentation, and raise their
prices accordingly, for merchandise that is not immediately available...
interruptions in the supply line, apparently, there has been some
clampdown, and rumours fly about the death of Mateas.

It is quite gratifying to see the fear that our actions have created,
for a little while at least. Mateas the untouchable, the invincible, the
ruler of Guyana in all but name, his legend was great. Now the idol is
toppled, and many are afraid: if Mateas could be destroyed, none are
safe. I will have to tell the rest of Red Shift of this, when I return.

In time, word should reach Dumont that he has a buyer for his type of
merchandise, and he may try to contact me. Then... we shall see.

I was disturbed during lunch today, which is not unusual: an attractive
woman, alone, in this town draws attention that reminds me of roaches
clustering around spilt sugar.

When I dismissed his advances, he turned to business, telling me word
had reached him of my requirements; and that he represented a supplier
who might be able to fulfil my needs.

The man - calling himself only Johann - arranged a second meeting, where
I might inspect the merchandise and see if it met with my satisfaction.
I believe - I hope - that this is Dumont, and that I can leave this
place soon.

+++++Entry 7
The meet was... interesting. I do not believe Dumont was present, unless
he was in fact "Johann", but I was taken to his warehouse, shown the
array of misery he sells. I made approving noises, indicated those in
which I had an interest, and explained my need to take blood samples
from each for "compatibility testing": we agreed upon tomorrow, and then
we will discuss price.

Hopefully that will draw the man out: a sale like this is sizeable
enough to need his personal attention, at a stroke I am buying half his
stock, and the less valuable specimens at that: these are what remains
after the skilled and the comely have been skimmed off.

+++++Entry 8
I failed, and Dumont is dead, his knowledge - whatever it might have
been - dead with him. My failure may not be complete, but it galls
nevertheless.

They became greedy or lustful, perhaps? Or they doubted my story? I
revealed myself and my purpose somehow, as I built up the story and my
contacts?

Dumont was there, I recognised his handwriting even though I had never
met the man. He was bluff and crude, probably deliberately so; belching,
sweatily flatulent, offering me "freebies" with whatever of his
merchandise might excite my desire, all intended to dismay and unsettle
me. Foolish amateur.

All went well, though, as I took pinpricks of blood from my candidates
and tested them. (Actually only for Rhesus factor, but a creative
relabelling of the test slides solved that and gave me far more
impressive results) I found fifteen "acceptable" candidates, and we
retired to his office, to discuss prices in more detail.

And then the fool had his guards - Johann and Salvio - try to seize me
and pin me in my chair, to be bound hand and foot, doubtless raped, and
then sold. I can only assume he either doubted my credibility, or that
he believed selling me would be more profitable than selling his slaves
to me.

Since he has a ready market, then that is probably true, I should have
considered that possibility. The Doctor would have bought the cattle
anyway, and I daresay I would bring a good price as an ornament for some
man's bedroom.

The men were strong, but slow and woefully unskilled, and this was a
situation for which the Academy trained us well... I kicked the chair
over backwards, falling away with the two men flailing at air, leaving
me leisure to rake my razors across the backs of their knees. Both
tumbled to the ground, screaming, as I rose and drew my Walther.

Dumont was too quick for his own good, and had brought out a handgun: He
fired once, and missed. I fired twice, and did not.

I almost cursed my training, that meant I instinctively double-tapped
his chest, the explosive rounds shredding heart and lungs, killing him
almost instantly. And to imagine there are those who say the PB-120 is
insufficiently lethal... I wish that were true, I might have had time to
question Dumont.

Instead, I finished Johann and Salvio, and searched the office: I came
away with cash, papers, and computer storage that perhaps Gates can
extract data from. There were two other guards outside, who came at the
sound of the shooting: the first I shot as he entered the office,
sending him reeling away howling in pain: the other fled rather than
face me.

The slaves, when I quickly questioned a few, knew nothing, had heard and
seen little, knew little of their captor: a few of the more attractive
ones could detail Salvio and Johann's unimaginitive perversions, making
me glad not to have been subjected to them myself.

There was nothing more to do except release the slaves and escape:
perhaps it will be seen as a vigilante action, more likely as a turf war
between slavers who killed Dumont and stole his merchandise.

I have done all I can here, it is time leave this dirty little port town
and return to my friends.

Now, I must tell them the truth. Perhaps, even the _whole_ truth.]<<<<<
