>>>>>[This is getting difficult. Firstly, Van Holde made me, which
complicates matters. I knew he was good, but this makes him _very_ good.
So far no big deal, he knows I'm just a PI, but... the guy gives me the
creeps, and his knowing I'm watching him does not fill me with joy.

Secondly, he's getting unstable. See later for the footage, but he's
after a few people. First name was Geo, looking via SLand, next name was
Pyro and he started beating the streets, then he started beating people,
then he shot some people.

He doesn't seem to be getting the answers he wants, and when he doesn't
get answers he gets angry, and when he gets angry people get hurt. You
want me to stay on him, it's going to cost you >>encrypted<< extra per
diem hazard pay.

Take a look for yourself and see why.

A crowded Auburn street in a rougher neighbourhood, the POV following
Ronin: as he peers into a store window, the view dips to adjust a shoe
lace, then rises to pass him without a hitch: Marlowe using car mirrors
and other items to keep his quarry in view as he lead-tails him, before
Ronin turns off to the left into a quieter side street.

Marlowe takes a few moments to reverse his jacket and add a SuperSonics
cap, then resumes the tail: he just catches Ronin vanishing into a bar,
and finds a doorway to lurk in.

After a few minutes, an Ork flies out of the bar window, like a comet
with a tail of broken glass. Screams and several shots can be heard, and
several men and women run out of the bar: one turns, raising a pistol,
and several more shots crack out, the man thrown backwards to sprawl in
the road. You hear Marlowe draw a weapon, and look down at it - an old
Ultra-Power automatic, the blueing worn off much of the slide - to check
the safety and that a round's chambered.

Two of the fleeing bar patrons are passing Marlowe: one throws up his
arms and falls as though kicked in the spine, the other dives into the
doorway. Marlowe shoves him back out, ignoring his plea, and the man
jerks and staggers, a bullet blowing a chunk of plascrete out of the
wall as others smash the live out of him. The detective winces,
muttering "I ain't getting paid enough for this."

More shouts, screams and then a pause, and Marlowe looks out in time to
see another figure stagger out of the bar to slam into a parked
Jackrabbit: Ronin, pursuing, on it at once, moving with inhuman speed to
slam the woman's head two or three times against the car's roof.

There follows a short exchange, Ronin asking what appear to be pointed
questions and the woman not answering clearly, before the samurai shoves
a pistol in the woman's face and thumbs back the hammer. You can't make
out the words, but he seems to be exaggerating the slow, clear delivery
of his speech: the woman spits in his face.

Her reply makes him tense rock-solid, face white with fury, before he
relaxes, shrugs and brings a fist down hard on her shoulder, breaking
her collarbone. She grimaces with pain, but says nothing: Ronin repeats
his question, and she shakes her head. He smashes the pistol across her
face, and she gives him a bruised and broken-toothed smile, still
shaking her head and saying nothing.

The samurai shrugs. And shoots her twice in the face, at point-blank
range.

Marlowe drops back out of sight, cursing softly to himself.

Like I said, it's going to get expensive if you want me to carry on
trailing this guy. He's dangerous, and pissed off, and willing to use
violence, and doesn't like being followed, and isn't getting the answers
he wants.

There are four kinds of homicide: felonious, excusable, justifiable and
praiseworthy...
