Good morning, ma'am. How are you feeling this evening? Better, I hope.
"Uh.... Tired. But far better than I have for quite some time."
Excellent. Perhaps we can talk about your personal security
arrangements, then.
"You mean my bodyguards."
I mean your current lack of bodyguards.
"I'll find replacements."
That's what I mean to talk about, ma'am. I would like to replace your
now deceased freelancers with devoted Maxim employees rather than more
freelancers.
"No, John. I will not let you use my bodyguards to keep tabs on me, and
I know that's what you'll do with them."
I will admit that they would certainly report to me as I am their direct
superior. But Maxim and Org personnel are signifigantly better trained
than any freelancer you can find and hire, ma'am.
"Perhaps. Only perhaps. I've met runners that would beat you and I for
skill, John, and if I use my own bodyguards, then I know that they are
working for me, not for you."
Apparently, as recent events have shown. You do know that the physical
adept who saved you from death died not too soon after getting you to
safety, don't you?
"What? Howard's dead?"
Yes. Blood loss. And the only reason that you survived that I can tell
is that your attacker didn't count on the defensive spells that you have
anchored and quickened on you. Spells that held off the attacking spell
just long enough before collapsing that you were hit on the falling edge
of the manabolt. Spells that Maxim mages quickened and anchored to
you, not your prescious freelancers. As it stands, you're still recovering
from your wounds.
"No, I will not let you place Maxim employees as my bodyguards."
Then absolve me of all security responsiblity for your personal safety.
"You have got to be kinding! You're my head of security, and your first
and foremost duty is to keep me alive!"
Then, goddammit, let me do my fraggin job! You're alive because Maxim
took the time and effor to make sure you stayed alive. You're also alive
because you're fraggin lucky. Not because you're personally skilled, not
because you're bodyguards, not for any other reason. If you want to stay
alive, then you let _me_ run your security, not you.
"Frag you, John! I'm my own boss, and I'll decide who protects me and
who my bodyguards are, not you. I can have your head handed to you in
thirty seconds, John, without so much as breaking a sweat."
If you want to run your own bodyguards, then do it. Because if want to
stay alive another year or so, you need me. The bodyguards you hired are
all dead, Nicole. All of them! Except for the intervention of fate,
you'd be dead now too, and Maxim would be looking for a new CEO or
collapsing under its own weight. If you kill me, your enemies will have
your head within a year. Keep me alive, though, and I can keep you alive
damn near indefinately. But to do that you _must_ let me run your security!
"Go to hell, John. Go directly to hell, do not pass go, do not collect
200 nuyen."
If there is a hell, I'll meet you there. But you know I'm right,
Nicole. You're brilliant and ruthless, but you're too fraggin stubborn
for your own safety.
"Give me a list that I can choose from."
No. I have four people already picked out. Accept them or remove me
from office.
"Damn you. Afraid that I'll pick people you can't control, aren't you?"
No, I know you'll pick your guards for their devotion to you personally
over thier ability to keep you alive. I've picked them expressly on
thier skills, background, and loyalty to Maxim Arms. I don't give a damn
whether they can be controled by you or not.
"What are they like, then."
Terry Tutt is an Org trained combat mage with 15 years of Org experience
in some of their premier Quads. His most recent quad was destroyed in
the Berlin raid. Lois Green is a physical adept who's been a part of
Maxim for nearly 18 years, and was a member of the Azzy-Maxim Desert Wars
campaign as well as one of the raiders on Shiawase last year. Patty
Winters is a rigger and decker who runs rotorcraft, ground cars, and who
we've provided with a milspec cyberdeck as well. She's been around too
and was one of the people responsible for keeping the Cairo Outlet from
falling to Ares corporate strike teams back after the Switzerland
meeting. And Erin Marcus is another Org veteran and special ops runner.
She's had UCAS military experience, independant merc experience in the
Yucatan, Poland, Thailand, and served in several Desert Wars campaigns.
They are the best that Maxim has to offer in terms of all-around skill.
They all have Mindlocks and they are all veterans with at least 10 years
of Maxim or Org experience.
"And they all report directly to you."
Ma'am, if you order them to say nothing to me about where you go, who you
see, what you do, they have been instructed to say nothing to me. That's
the best I can do regarding that aspect of your worries.
"Better than I suspected after what you said earlier. All right, John,
we'll try it your way. For now."]<<<<<
