>>>>>[We have received notification from an informant that the drugs and
BTLs are going to auction. Location is at this time unknown, as is a
date, but we now know he has them and is trying to sell them off. A
request has gone to Hoover asking for details on anyone big enough in
the Seattle area to take this kind of shipment. We shouldhave an answer
back in a few hours, at which point, would you like us to start shaking
these people down?

We have also, finally been allowed access to the scene of the Lone Star
theft, they finally buckled under the pressure. Jeez have they made a
mess of that site. They've had officers and christ knows what walking
all over it, there's nothing of value there at all, that we could use to
find the sources for the equipment Thunda used. The interesting thing,
is they have 6 other containment areas in that single vault, all of them
untouched. Including one that holds a small fortune in cash and credit.
Another contains valuables taken from heists and burglaries. Why Thunda
concentrated on the single cage, when a greater value was near to hand
is a mystery. You may be amused to learn, that they are now installing
live guards to supplement the expensive electronics they had in place.
Seems like Thunda just taught Lone Star something about maintaining
security, and relying too much on technology.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Once the information has been transmitted, I want an analysis on
the most likely buyers, there's no point crashing in on every underworld
figure in Seattle, we'll just cause problems and drive Thunda deeper
underground. We hit a selected few, but subtly, pumping for information
rather than arrests. We'll discuss this once we have the results of the
analysis. Inform me immediately we have a list of potential buyers.

Pull out what information you can from the scene at LSS, I want
photographs and analytical data from the scene, anything LSS are willing
to hand over might be useful, own forensics reports.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Your comments have gone before the committee. They have rejected
your resignation. Your promotion has also been confirmed, and your
salary adjusted to reflect this. The committee has made it's decision,
you will abide by that decision.

You are officially SAC of the Seattle Division, and will answer directly
to Marian Tudor, in all cases of federal operation, except Achilles.
Your ASAC will be Lt. Crawley, promotion effective immediately.

You have full authorised access to RCSC in Omaha, and ITC in
Indianapolis. A further 12 agents have been assigned to you because of
the sensitive nature of Seattle in the Achilles Project. That gives you
35 agents to work with. If I can convince the committee I'll get more
down to you, but that will have to do for now. I have been authorised
to offer you one SO squad. Make the best use of them, that's all we've
got to spare. Because of the nature of some of the items coming through
at this time, DOJ has given us access to NDIC in Cleveland as
well.]<<<<<

*****PRIVATE: Chris D'Arkan
>>>>>[Chris, I'm sorry about the loss of Hakkerstone, Shannon, James and
Juarez. They were good men, all of them. But it happens, and if
everybody resigned their commission for each little mistake, we wouldn't
have a command structure, though that may be an agreeable situation for
some. The committee were all for accepting your resignation, but Brian
fought damned hard to keep you there in Seattle, he's got a lot of faith
in you, it'd be a shame to see that faith wasted.

Advice, as a friend, stick with it. Get Thunda, by whatever means
necessary, we must concentrate on Achilles. Thunda is absorbing too
much valuable time. We have been notified by MI6 that they have
movement of relevant suspects within their borders, we know from
investigation in this country that we have suspects moving as well.
Achilles is on line, we need to get back to it. You know Achilles
better than anyone else, except maybe myself and Brian, we can't afford
to lose you on this. The committee still do not wish involvement from
the CIA, or other "darker" sections, which means we're alone in this.
If we fail, it's going to be the end of the FBI, and maybe this
administration, shit, maybe even the end of this country, I don't know.
We're not geared for this kind of investigation, but we've got to make
it work. If you have any doubt as to our capabilities, or your own,
remember the mission, and your oath.

Wishing you luck, and congratulations.]<<<<<

*****INTERNAL: Achilles Project
>>>>>[Agent Crawley, would you report to my office immediately.
Headquarters has authorised me to inform you of your promotion to
Lieutenant, and that you are now officialy my ASAC. WHich means
everybody, I'm sorry to announce, I'm the new Commander of this office.
You may all address me as your lordship, his majesty or similar terms of
endearment. I will be holding a small celebration tonight in, yeah,
right, someone find a bar that's relatively clean please, as in, a lack
of shadows, for myself and Special Agent, Lt. Crawley. You may all
give me your true and honest opinions there, on a one off occassion to
voice yourselves. Then I'm afraid it's back to work.

As you all know, I have a slightly more relaxed approach to operational
procedures than Hak. That does not mean I will tolerate any reduction
in professionalism, or efficiency.

And Johnson, if you wish to get involved in long conversations with
members of the Shadow Community who are quite obviously baiting you, ask
me permission first, and that goes for all of you. I don't want
arguments starting up with an us and them attitude. The FBI already
have a division in Seattle that is geared to deal with this sort of
thing. We have a different purpose and I am not going to get hauled
over the rails because one of you has been running off at the mouth.

Special Agent Crawley, as your first official job in your new command
position I want you to arrange an appointment for me with Marian Tudor
at the Federal Building, the current Chief of Lone Star, and the current
head of Seattle's division of Knight Errant. Check the business
directory <g> and find out what other major players are in town. I want
them all to know that the FBI, and specifically us, are here, and that
our resources and skills are at their disposal. I'd rather not suffer
the isolation we've had over Thunda again. I don't very much care how
you contact these people, or what you do to convince them to meet, but
it's important they understand we are not here to interfere with their
"patch".

I'd prefer to deal with Marian first, she's going tobe the one who's
really pissed at us.

And Crawley, find me two other things, a restaurant where I can eat, and
a bar to relax. Christ is everything in this damn town occupied by the
criminal element?

Oh, yeah, and congratulations on the promotion.]<<<<<

Lynch that's not the problem, I've scanned through most of the decent
places to eat and drink, and they're either Yakuza, Mafia, Tong, BTL
dens, or something similar. Another dozen in downtown alone are more
racist than Thunda. Christ in a sidecar, what the hell has the federal
agency in this fucking town been doing. Marian, is going to get more
than a rocket up her ass if I find out they've all been sitting on their
thumbs.

I don't have a problem sharing a bar that has a few Shadows in it, but
the couple that caught my eye are labelled as regular hang-outs. The
last thing I need off duty, is a fraggin' gunfight with a pissed off
runner, because he saw my badge, and has a beef with the law. I have to
agree with you though, I don't like suits much myself, never have, but
then they don't like me right back. <g>

Thanks for the list, I'll check 'em out.

And this is the FBI, which means, unfortunately, promotion comes with
warm shoes. I appreciate the sentiment though.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Two pieces of news. First, Mani and Griffyn seem to be coping with
each other, which is a great relief.

+++++begin trideo
The camera peers down at Easy, long legs raised, feet on her desk,
spurred bootheels resting on the Kevlar-covered foam pad that saves the
wood veneer (or has she upgraded to real wood?) from their razor edges.
Mani sits in a corner, reading a small book with a green cover.

Both glance up as the door opens, relax as Griffyn enters.

"Hoi there. Thought I'd drop by and..." he pauses, looking with slight
surprise at Mani. The mercenary carefully places his book in a green
velvet bag and tucks it into a pocket in his embroidered jacket, rises
to his feet.

"I am Mani Cuma." he says, bowing formally to Griffyn before offering
his hand.

Slightly nonplussed, Griffyn raises his eyebrows toward Easy and shakes
the offered hand: if either tried to go for the Crushing Grip(TM),
neither showed any sign. "Griffyn. Pleased to meet you."

Easy suggests "Griff, Mani has pledged himself to my service. Mani,
Griffyn is a trusted friend of mine. I owe him my life."

"Then he is my friend also." Mani bows again.

"What exactly does 'pledged to her service' mean?" Griffyn asks.

Mani pauses a moment. "I would suggest 'what it says', but it seems to
be often misunderstood here. I am hers to command. I will follow her
orders. I will do whatever she wishes, until I die."

"Why?" Griff asks after a moment's thought.

"Because she is the most beautiful woman to walk this Earth." Mani says
simply. "Because to die in her service would be the highest of honours.
Because she is a warrior, and I dream of winning her heart, and can
think of no way to do so except through showing I am as valorous as
she."

Griffyn's eyebrows rise slightly at Mani's vehement pronouncement, but
he seems to take it in stride. "Uh huh. And she's also my friend, and I
want her to stay alive. Can we co-operate?"

"Of course." Mani nods. "Your reputation precedes you, Griffyn, your
deeds are legend. I will be proud to fight at your side."

Easy interjects "Griff, Mani might sound old-fashioned, but he knows
what he's doing. He's just... traditional."

"Alright, then." Griffyn sighs and settles into a chair. "Anyway,
what's the plan? You think they might get cute and try to set an ambush
for us?"

"Yeah. So, we play the angles. I really doubt they'd expect three of us,
so..."
+++++end trideo

I put some feelers out around our target, heard what I expected, and we
figured out a plan. Then it had to be changed when we gained another
assistant: she got here safely, but there have been... complications
since then.

+++++begin trideo
The floor of the Easy Eight, as a young woman enters - a _very_ young-
looking woman, her short height making her seem even younger (she's not
even five feet tall). Small, with her hair a spiky tangle of black,
vividly dyed streaks, and tribal clansign, she wears cutoff denim shorts
and a "Lethal Response" T-shirt under an oversized leather jacket, with
heavy leather boots laced almost to her knee: and she carries a heavy
black nylon flight bag over one shoulder.

She walks up to the bar and drops the bag on a stool: it seems to creak
under the weight. After a moment, Vincenzo turns to her.

"Hello, Mr Vincenzo. I'm here to help your boss. I'm called Stephanie."
She thrusts out a hand.

Vincenzo shakes her hand. "One moment, Miss Stephanie." He speaks softly
into an intercom. "Someone will be with you shortly. In the meantime, a
drink?"

Stephanie regards the shelves critically. "It depends if you've got any
good beer."

"Are you over twenty-one?" Vincenzo politely asks.

"That's a rude question. And it depends which identity of mine you ask,
and no, I'm not going to tell you which identity is real, I only told
you what I was called, not what my name was, so you really wouldn't know
because I've got several identities and they're all different ages and
until I told you which I was you wouldn't know and even then you'd have
to decide whether I was lying or not, because it would be really silly
to tell you I was underage if I was trying to get you to sell me a
beer."

Vincenzo - not Stephanie - draws breath after this verbal onlsaught. "We
have some Wadsworth 6X, if that suffices...?"

"Not bad at all." Stephanie jumps up onto a bar stool next to her bag.

Vinny is pouring her beer just as Griffyn approaches. He and Stephanie
adopt almost identical expressions - thoughtful, face raised - before
Stephanie turns to face him.

"I don't like _you_ at all." she says tartly.

Griffyn regards her for a moment with an appraising look. "Only because
you don't know me yet."

"Maybe. You're meant to be good in a fight. Personally I think my Daddy
- I mean my contact-who-sent-me-here - slipped on the keyboard. He meant
you were _food_ in a fight." Stephanie regards Griffyn defiantly.

"I am no such thing. And who are you to criticise?" Griffyn asks
sharply.

"_I_ am Stephanie Susan Running Wolf Lynch, thank you very _much_, and
my kills and coups are more than a man may count. And just because
you're a -"

Griffyn cuts her off with a harsh glare. "Some things should not be
said too loudly -- least of all in public."

"Then let's go talk where we _can_ say what we want as loud as we like."
Stephanie says, grabbing her black nylon holdall with one hand and her
beer with the other.

Griffyn looks appreciatively at Stephanie as she turns to leave and
smiles to himself. "Vincenzo?"

Vinny approaches from down the bar where he had been watching the
display with amusement. "Yes, Mr. Griffyn?"

"Would you please tell Easy and Mani that I will be back later? I'm not
sure exactly how long I'll be, but I have a feeling I'll be bringing
another friend along." Griffyn says as he continues to watch Stephanie
walk defiantly towards the door. With that, he turns and follows
Stephanie out of the bar.
+++++end trideo

They locked themselves in one of the upstairs cubicles for nearly three
hours. And they were _noisy_. And they came out, both looking tired but
happy, still squabbling. You didn't tell me Stephanie was _also_ a tiger
shapeshifter.

Anyway, she did a good job covering us on the hit: it worked a lot
better with her in place. Though I thought you traditionally put a
sniper, not a medium machine gun, in the God spot...]<<<<<

C: David J H Coppinger, Director, SIGA
V: Brigadier-General Mark von Drexler, Chairman, Intelligence
Oversight Committee

C: Good morning, General. Thank you for-

V: Cut it short, David, I've got a lot to deal with this morning. What's
your problem?

C: Akbar and his Yemeni Jihad, with the arsenal they have acquired, will
become _our_ problem, General-

V: A Yemeni civil war is hardly a UCAS problem. It's on the wrong side
of the globe.

C: It's over a strategic resource -

V: David, I'm as aware as you are of the importance of niobium. I'm also
well aware that there are alternate sources, and that Akbar has no
intention of cutting the supply. Our aerospace companies are in no
danger: do you see Ares or Federated Boeing panicking? No? Are there
any intelligence reports suggesting a threat? No. Then concentrate on
your job.

C: I think we're missing a key point.

V: What? That one of your agents has a business interest involved? I'm
aware Jason Lynch has a sizeable holding in the Rebels, I know
they're on the front line, I'm sure he may go and assist them, and I
have no problem with that. It's not a UCAS Intelligence issue,
though. That Akbar may overthrow the Yemeni government? Bravo Foxtrot
Delta. Revolution ten thousand miles away, no Americans hurt.

He won't touch corporate assets, _far_ too risky: the Court would
stomp his raghead ass into the dust. He'll go for Sana'a, then Aden,
and offer big concessions to the corporations if they tacitly back
him. Simple, clear, no need for us to be concerned.

C: No, General. You're neglecting the threat a wealthier Akbar poses.
What will he and his fanatics do with their niobium revenue? I think
there's a grave danger he'll try to export his revolution to the Gulf
states, and that threatens oil. And that _is_ a threat to the UCAS.

V: Assuming he even has the means to seize and operate a niobium mine,
because they're all corporate and extraterritorial. Otherwise I think
it's far more likely he and his men will invest the money in palaces,
expensive cars and Zurich-Orbital accounts. If he starts a military
buildup in the region, we'll see him and we'll still have plenty of
time to act. I'm recommending no action and that is final. Was there
anything else?

C: No, General, you've said all that needs to be said.
