>>>>>[ The Vulcan system is a maze of datalines and nodes worthy of
MagnaTech
and the likes. After some careful searching and IC dodging, I finally found
the node corresponding to Meyers' old office, and the associated datastores.
Like the others who were here, I found no records of the work that Meyers did
here, looks like the dustup was pretty thourough. What I did find was another
open port on the lab SPU, with the same time-date stamps I found in the node
where the final battle of the crash of '54 occured. That was proof enough for
me. I sent another trace frame through the port, and it got caught in the same
reference loop that the last one I sent did. There is no doubt that there was
an open port of communication between MagnaTech Seattle and Vulcan at the time
of MONICAs defeat. I scanned the system logs and found traces of self altering
code fragments, except that these were not in a state of decay. The code
fragments I found in Vulcan were maintaining themselves at a steady level,
neither shrinking like the ones over at Magna, nor growing like the the main
code for MONICAs brain and frames when she was active. Someone definately has
some part of MONICA and has managed to override most of the conflicting
directives implanted when RUFUS mereged with her. Whatever is left of her
probably isn't growing, but is probably stable. This could be a nightmare in
the making. ]<<<<<

>>>>>[ Well the rest of us made a good showing in our on-site recon of
Vulcan.
While DE was running around in the system, we were running around the complex
looking for Meyers' old office. We pulled a class sneak job on the way in.
We picked up a security guard heading in for work and he was just Napalm's
size and build. So we sent Napalm in as a decoy, and had him open the back
door for us. As we were searching the complex, DE was playing havok with the
security systems, giving us a clean break to the office/lab. We met with
almost no resistance, just one bewildered security guard (a rookie no doubt).
Cowboy just walked right up to him with his shotgun under his coat and asked
"hey pard, where's the bathroom on this floor?" The rookie didn't even realize
that he wasn't supposed to be there until he started giving directions. By
that time I had gotten behind him and was ready to club him with a chair.
He was an easy mark.

We found the lab and office that used to be occupied by Meyers almost empty.
It looked like whoever extracted Meyers cleaned out the place. All that was
left were a few circuit boards and some tools. Thats when it came out of the
closet. This huge black shape tossed aside the closet door like it was made of
cardboard and charged us, not saying a word. Cowboy got the drop on him first,
but missed and ruined a nice new plate glass window. By the time I could act,
he was on top of me, swinging away with a katana. I managed to sneak in a
good hit with my spurs when his katana sliced the air over my head. (being
short does have it's advantages). The bogey did a backflip away from me as I
took another swipe with my spurs. Napalm, still in the guard uniform, yelled
"clear" and sent a burst of flame flying from his fingertips towards the guy.
The flames passed through him like he wasn't even there.

Napalm dropped down his smartgoggles and started yelling "Abomination!!" while
me and Cowboy jumped the guy at the same time. I rolled in low from the front,
a ball of fury aimed at his knees, while Cowboy leaped at his upper back from
behind, shotgun over his head like a club. We both hit at the same time, I
crashed into his knees, and Cowboy smacked him on the head with his gun as his
momentum carried him through to crash into his upper back. There was a
sickening snap as the guy's knees bent the wrong way, but it didn't sound like
bones breaking, more like plastic and metal. The thing that really shocked
me was that he kept trying to get up. We couldn't get near him as he foundered
on legs that no longer worked, wildly swinging the katana.

Napalm shouted "just kill the damm thing", and squeezed off a shot from his
Predator into the guy's gut. I retrieved my AK, and proceeded to remove his
katana arm. Cowboy joined in with his shotgun. Between the three of us,
he was dismembered in seconds. The worst part is that he continued to squirm.
The stumps of his arms were all wires and cables. Napalm said "We'd better
take him with us, it's one of those "death knights" that kidnapped Yoshida and
killed the Fuchi VP. I said "yeah, but it'll be trouble carrying him and
fighting our way out. They must have heard that!" That's when I noticed
Cowboy dragging the guy to the window. He shoved him out and said "Whadda
ya know, OddBall parked right under the window. I think our amigo here can
handle the fall". A thump and a cry of suprise that could only come from
OddBall floated through the window. "Just get him in the car, we'll explain
later." I spoke through my commlink. The three of us proceeded to leave the
building, leaving a few quick firefights in our wake. We enevtually had to
jump out a first floor window and make a fast break for the car. OddBall drove
like the wind, thanking CoHort for the car. Don't worry CoHort, OddBall didn't
put any scratches in it...yet. ]<<<<<

>>>>>[ Well, that's the story. Meyers is definately mixed up in a
kidnapping,
a murder, and what may be the last remnants of a rogue AI.

I've been examining the remains of the "Death Knight" that the team brought
back, and there is nothing Human about it. It appears to be some kind of
robotic construct, but I can't seem to pin down it's control system. I've
located a CPU board in it's head, the only part that Jake and Cowboy didn't
damage. I've been examining the control programs, and can't seem to find
any kind of "brain" module. I did, however, find a cellular transmission/
reception system, that apparently works either through the mobile phone system
or a satlink. This thing was taking orders and commands from a remote source.

With a little work, I think I can wire my deck to the uplink circuits and see
where it leads me. I have a hunch that I'll end up in whatever system Meyers
is currently using, and maybe even find what's left of MONICA there too.

that hyberbol or did it really pass through the thing? ]<<<<<

through the thing, but that sounds unlikely. ]<<<<<
