<Time is 23:44 pm local. Cut to a harassed-looking and windblown reporter
standing by a high chainlink fence>
"...standing by the perimeter wire at Ellsworth Air Force Base, watching
activity inside that seems to indicate some sort of major alert in progress.
Every few minutes, an aircraft is taking off, and very few seem to be
landing. Most of them are tankers, but some are bombers, and from where
we're standing it <jet noise drowns out all sound, dark shape with four
blue-white spears of afterburner flashes by in background> sorry about that,
from where we're standing we can see armed sentries around the aircraft.
That suggests that the aircraft are armed with live ordnance and that this
is not a routine peacetime drill. We're being approached by a vehicle, it
appears to be Air Force Police, and we may have to <static>"

<Cut to aerial camera view of Norfolk Naval Base: ships are being moved
out of their berths. Voiceover>
"It's the same story here at Norfolk, Sarah. At least five ships have put
to sea in the last few hours. We're looking down on the missile cruiser
"John Wayne" now, and she appears to be loading ordnance: armed guards,
and warning flags flying. The carrier "Lexington" is embarking her air
wing as we speak, while her escort group forms up around her."

<Cut to a view of a military base's gatehouse, rather jerky>
"Can we speak to your press officer?"
"I'm sorry, sir, that won't be possible right now-"
"Who is your commanding officer?"
"You can check the base directory, sir. I must ask that you-"
"We have a right to know what's going on! <view advances towards soldiers> We
have the right-<black screen, sounds of struggle and several bleeped curses>"
<picture returns, view from outside closed gate>
"I'm sorry, sir, but the base is closed to all visitors until further notice."
<View pulls back to show the sign proclaiming this as Fort Bragg.>

<Cut back to anchorwoman.>
"And so the mysterious alert continues, as Pentagon spokesmen refuse to
comment on either the sudden increase in security at all UCAS military
bases, the unexplained military operations, or the alarming explosion
of a nuclear weapon beyond the Moon. As the mystery deepens, we are
left to wonder exactly what is going on. Sarah Jennings, for 'Inquiry'."
