+++++ Subject: We are... even more

After several more or less fruitless tries, we finally reached this...

Hamish, Fohdytoo, and Minx are cowering behind the remains
of a wall, the camera view seems to come from a shoulder
mount camera. Next to them an unknown male in tattered
clothes whispers "That building over there. That was where
they were!" Canis' voice comes from behind the camera sighs:
"Another one. How old _is_ the data?" His voice sounds
tired, barely more then a hoarse croaking.

The unwashed man in his forties turns toward the camera,
then answers, "About three months. Haven't been in the area
since - it's too dangerous!"

You have a closer look at the cowering shadowrunners and
suddenly notice how tired they look. Scars that haven't been
there the last time are visible, their clothes are torn and
sewed in several places. Their weapons look worn ad used,
but are in a far better condition then the rest of their
visible equipment. The most drastic change, however, is in
their eyes, eyes you've seen in documentationary flicks long
time veterans from the Desert Wars, eyes that've seen death
far too often and too much grief to feel anything anymore.
Only Fohdytoo's Zeiss cybereyes look unchanged, but the
wrinkles have buried themselves deep into his face, too.

"OK, we go in anyway - let's move." Hamish looks at the
others, and loosens the claymore in its sheath. Suddenly
Orion moves into view, his military uniform made room for
his usual synth-leather jacket, his katana in hand. "It's
all silent, although IR shows some kind of heat source
inside. We can't find out what, though. Might be everything
from some humans to some fleshies to a simple oven still
operating for some mystical reason. Auf geht's!" He looks to
a point slightly left of the camera, probably Canis.

Canis sighs again, then answers, "Right. Let's move. Sam,
give us a ten..."

The camera view barely looks over the wall. By the sounds
from the right and left, people are preparing to jump over
the wall. The barrel of an Ares Alpha rifle is visible in
the center of the picture. Across the road a two story
storage building can be seen. The second floor was obviously
used for some target practice with MGs and assault cannons -
one can see even the evening sky through some holes. The
ground floor is quite intact, some bullet holes are even
filled with concrete. The main door, or rather gate, are
closed and looks quite strong. You hear low chanting in a
strange, guttural and harsh sounding language. It sounds
like war-cries pressed into some kind of song.

"Go!" yells Fohdytoo, and Canis raises with the others,
jumping over the remains of the wall and charging towards
the building's doors.
Something blurs the air between Canis' outstretched left
hand and the gate, and suddenly it bursts from its hinges.
Canis seems to stumble, and slows down.

To the left, someone yells "Contact, first floor!" and fires
a burst at the building. The camera turns to the first
floor, and makes out moving shapes up there. About half a
second later, a rifle-fired grenade explodes at the wall,
temporary disturbing the image.

Canis curses and drops prone, as one of the attackers fires
in his direction. The camera image, although heavily shaken,
shows Hamish charge into the building, with two mercenaries
following directly. Instantly, the light of flashes can be
seen through the doorway and shots and screams can be heard.
Someone yells an obvious "Contact" again, and one of the
mercenaries drops backward out of the doorway again, blood
streaming from a shoulder wound. As he hits the floor, he
quickly rolls to the right, into cover.

Somewhere behind Canis, the staccatic sound of an automatic
weapon rings, and bullets pierce in and in some cases bounce
off the first floor's wall.

The image shakes again as Canis starts running, nearly
dropping again as he handles his rifle, toward the entrance.
Minx is directly in front of him, her heavy pistol ready.
They enter a large, dimly lit room. Several humanoid shapes
are covering behind some crates and exchanging fire with the
invading mercenaries. Minx fires at someone who is running
for better cover and hits, while Canis leaps to the right,
hitting the floor.

The firefight lasts about three more seconds. In this time,
the firing from above is silenced by the still firing MG
outside, but positions don't change much inside. The camera
view doesn't change and Canis doesn't fire until he raises
his head and screams "They're humans! Damn, stop fire..." He
jumps to his feet, a stupid move in a firefight. As suddenly
red dots appear on the camera's lens, the image comes to a
rest, showing the ceiling.

"He's down!" someone yells, "Medic!" The camera angel raises
above the crate it has been centered on and rocks as the
rifle the camera is attached to fires a long burst at the
enemies. From the edge of the picture, the flightpath of a
thrown grenade is visible that lands at the far side of the
room and explodes. Suddenly screams can be heard, and
several people are running away, being taken down by the
attackers' fire.

The one holding the camera whirls around and the camera
catches the image of Canis, laying on his back in a pool of
blood. Attached to his left shoulder is a camera, and an
Areas Alpha Combat Gun lies by his side. A female in full,
although worn-looking combat armor knees beside him, a
medkit open. "Jani, how does he look?" the voice asks.

The female looks up, her face invisible under her helmet,
and responses "Critical, Sir. Need magic NOW!" The camera
unsteadies as the person holding it looks around the room,
finally detecting Minx a few meters off, and the voice yells
"Minx! We need your help here!" Minx, who was covering the
area with her pistol, looks over her shoulder. As she sees
Canis, she curses violently, and charges toward him and
Jani, holstering her pistol. She comes to a skidding stop
next to the body of Canis, and curses again. She removes the
helmet Canis wears, helped by Jani, whose hands are already
blood covered, and places both hands on his head, covering
the terrible bullet hole in his cheek. Blood is oozing from
between her fingers, as she begins a low chant.

Minx looks up again, her face covered by sweat. She raises
her hands off Canis' face, and looks at Jani, who's still
cowering near her. "He'll live, I think. But that was a
close one..." Jani nods, then gets out a cloth and wipes the
blood from Canis' face. The wound is closed, a red scar
indicating where he was hit. Jani nods, then raises and
turns to take for the other injured fighters. The voice you
can now, that some stress is taken from it, as Fohdytoo's,
commands, "Alpha secures house. Beta, check for survivors we
can question. Gamma, Status?"

There's a short burst of static.

Don't worry too much - we have been given help by the army team we met
before, and Canis still lives. Although there's a severe change in his
attitude. Shit, we all changed...

This might be interesting for the magically active among you:

You still see the body of Canis on the ground, in the pool of blood,
with Minx to his side. As suddenly the air next to Canis blurs, a sign
of a manifesting spirit, the gun the camera is attached to jumps into
firing position, but Minx waves an OK in Fohdytoos direction. "It's OK,"
she says, "it's Okami." The spirit manifests in woman form, kneeling
besides Canis' still body. "Master," she whispers, stroking gently over
the man's face. The spirit looks up, tears in her eyes. "What is this?
It hurts, and yet there's no wound," she asks Minx. The woman seems
surprised by both the question and the apparent feelings of the spirit,
but answers, "Yeah, this pain we feel when we see a loved one
suffering..." Her voice trails off, lost in memories by the look of it.

After a while Okami grabs Minx' shoulder who looks up in surprise. "Help
him!" she demands urgently. "I did what I could. Now time will show if
he'll recover." After a while, Minx continues, "I thought you... ally
spirits attempt to go free when your master is in the grip of death?"
Okami looks at Minx, then answers, "there's no need. I am as free as I
need to be."
