SHADOWS: This is Joe Shadows with National News, reporting to you live, if a
bit worse for wear, from Omega Island. As you can see from the empty harbor
behind me, the German Fleet has left the island in the wake of the elections.
President Jacob Marcus issued a public statement before the fleet left,
thanking the German Empire for its intervention, in his words, "on behalf of
the forces fighting for freedom on Omega Island."

Following the elections, activity on the island increased dramatically.
Omega's new government has already been recognized by several nations,
including, the German Empire, UCAS, CAS, Great Britain, Atzlan, and
the Empire of Japan. There is also work underway for the United Nations to
accept the new government, approval of which is expected in the next few days.
On the slightly more local level, after his statement thanking the Germans,
President Marcus announced several programs for the rebuilding and repair of
the damage done to the capital city. He called for "a time of healing...when
Omega Island can be reborn in the image of its people, and not of tyrannical
corporate forces."

Presently, in what was called Tirandor Square, stands a huge stone statue of
the Greek letter Omega, underneath which is a large plaque, which has the names
of all who died when the former regime brutally massacred the participants of
peaceful demonstration. Although the authorities I have talked to have said
they haven't yet settled upon a new name for the area, high on the list is
Memorial Square and Freedom Plaza.

SHEILA: Very interesting, Shadows, but what about what happened to you?

SHADOWS: Ahhh...well, it seems during the confusion when the Germans sprung
their envelopment maneuver, someone on the Omega side touched off a rack of
homing missiles, which dispersed in a random pattern looking for targets. In
an absolutely freak occurrence, one locked on my camera's transmission signal,
and followed it in. I was severely injured, and my cameraman was killed,
despite the efforts of the German medical officers who raced to our aide.

SHEILA: I see. When did the German Fleet leave, incidentally?

SHADOWS: Actually, they started pulling out a few days ago, just after the
elections. Incidentally, the United Nations observers stayed behind on the
island for damage assessment, and for reporting back to the Security Council
over the possibility of aide to the tiny nation.

The only curious about the fleet's withdrawal is that they indicated they
weren't returning directly to Germany. I overheard one officer state something
about having to engage in patrol duty in the South Pacific. But that could
mean any number of things.

SHEILA: Cryptic to the last, eh? Well, thank you Shadows, and it's good to
see you all in one piece.

SHADOWS: Thank you, Sheila. This is Joe Shadows, reporting to you for
National News, on Omega Island.
