>>>>>[ I've just arrived in the Vulcan mainframe. Nightstalker must have
got
here before me, he left a nice little note for me on one of the low priority
I/O ports saying "You take the high road and I'll take the low chummer"

This system is a well constructed web of interlinked nodes that is a maze
worthy of the ancient greeks. It may take some time before I locate MONICA.
A quick analysis of the code fragments lying around have shown me that they
seem to be communicating to some central program that coordinates their tasks.
If I follow the trail through the system, I should find the core of MONICAs
revived being. I've cut loose another virus that will systematically clean up
all the minor code fragments sitting around, but it will take time, and I
doubt that it will work on the main core. Hopefully it will help.

I have to find MONICA and run the virus to cut her off from her Death Knights
before the others get into too much trouble, they won't be able to hold off
an organized force of them for too long. This is my race against time.

I'm off, I have very little time left... ]<<<<<

>>>>>[Well, I made Seattle and nobody shot at me getting off the train.
Good news so far.

Easy met me, too, which was a relief. I guess she figured she owed me
for taking out that hive before it ate too many of her customers: it was
good to hear how Huang grew into her commission, too, sounds like she's
gonna make a great officer.

She brought Mani, which was also sort of reassuring: a guy that big and
mean-looking covering for your meet dissuades anyone from interfering.

We talked, quickly. She gave me a few names, a little advice, and a few
people to talk to about finding work that would pay useful money. She
also told me to stay well away from her after this, because I'm more
trouble than she needs right now.

She did give me a bag of gear. A -227, nicely tricked out, that I chose
not to ask where she acquired it: looks like a SWAT weapon, but it's
close enough to what I'm used to to give me a warm comfortable feeling.
And an old SIG P226, with half a smartlink: just the look-angle and the
induction pad, a converted antique, but a _good_ antique, I've always
liked SIGs. The barrel's new and the trigger's in good shape, it should
shoot okay. I'll know once I get out of easy earshot of anyone who cares
and get them sighted in.

Finally, a cheapie, a twelve-gauge side-by-side with the buttstock sawn
off and the barrels cut back to about eighteen inches: enough for the
cyberchoke to work, but short and slim enough to be easily hidden under
a coat. Okay, only two rounds, but two pretty lethal rounds, it's a good
shotgun and rated for 3" magnum loads. With #4 shot or saboted slug,
it's a real day-spoiler.

Not what I'd use on a field op. But pretty handy here in the shadows.

Good kit for lots of reasons. Apart from anything else, easy ammo
replen: if you can't find nine-mil or twelve-gauge, what _can_ you find?

Jesus. See how the mighty are fallen, though. Here I am, lying in a
cheap plastic coffin on the third floor of a cheap motel, with a bag of
hot guns by my feet, a shotgun by the mattress, and two changes of
clothes to my name.

Monday morning I was Director of an intelligence agency. Not a big one,
not a very successful one, but still _someone_. I was a SEAL, even if I
was TAD. I knew who and what I was.

Now? Now I'm a rat running for a corner to hide in. And I still don't
know why.

But I may manage to find out. And then it's time for payback.

Payback _is_ a motherfucker.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Sir, my residence was attacked. Even though you had generously
assigned several agents to assist me in such a case, the shadowrunners
nevertheless have killed or captured all of them, and I myself barely
escaped alive.

I believe I should withdraw from Seattle as soon as possible. Your
advice?]<<<<<
