A table surrounded by flickering candlelight, illuminating the faces
gathered around the table. There is a different face in the group,
taking the place of Crow: a man in a patched leather jackal mask. Dog
and Hyena sit at the head of the table. The watcher, Umbra, leans
forward, staring into his wineglass.

"She will survive," Jackal says finally, after some moments of
silence. His voice is gravelly, alien, made even more strange by the
echos of his mask and the slow, halting speech.

Dog snorts at this, the scowling mask seeming to reflect her disdain
in its twisted visage. "Of course she'll live. We agreed that I would
use the spell if we were unable to take her any other way." She looks at
Hyena. "Wounded is better than letting her kill us all."

Jackal nods, the thin, pointed muzzle bobbing. "As will Brother
Crow...he has internal injuries, and I am afraid he will not be well for
a while...Without magical healing, of course." He looks pointedly at
Dog.

Hyena shakes his head. "No. Brother Crow will pay for his
foolishness."

Umbra speaks up, his voice younger than the others, wary. "We had no
way of knowing that the gas wouldn't have affected her."

"The gas was TAILORED to affect their systems," Dog snarls.
"Obviously, Brother Crow made an error somewhere, or she was prepared
for it in some way."

Jackal speaks again. "Children, children," he rasps, in a tone that
makes both Dog and Hyena turn to him, their glares nearly burning holes
in the leather of their masks. "The important thing, yes, is that we
have her, do we not? Whole and intact, for the most part...she will
heal. None of our number were killed. All in all, a success, yes?"

Hyena and Dog nod, reluctantly. Their deferrment to the jackal-man
leaves the question lingering of who's really in charge.

"Then we will leave her to heal...the wards shall keep her for the
time being, once she regains enough strength to move." Hyena stands. "We
are the Walkers of the Lost Circle. We drink of the Darkness and in
death find our life. May the Shadows of Those gone before be thine to
bind." The others in the circle look gravely to each other, repeating
the words. "Dismissed, Brother Umbra, while I speak with the elder
members in private."
