here than MagickNet, most consider a spell that physically imposes silence
(damps out vibrations in the air) over your area to be the simplest
effective method. On the other hand, it can be a two-edged sword, because
you can't hear anything either, and if ultrasound sensors are in
use, then the area appears as a hole rather than the normal background
reflections, so the better sensors can map out the "void" where they can't
detect. Like using a spell that absorbs light instead of invisibility and
generates a field of darkness that can be seen as a huge dark mass.
Obviously then, one would aim for the center, but it is at least less
accurate than with no protection at all. I've read there have been
some studies on a spell that would make one accoustically transparent
(except one's ear drums), much like invisibility for light, but it does
have problems, like not muting the sounds that you make as well
(footsteps, voice, etc.) which can also be used to track you.]<<<<<

The Generic Grimoire is a collection of spell formulae freeware/shareware
(if you like this spell, send 10 grams of your favorite enchanting radical
to _____ and support our research) at >>LTG/RTG<< that people over on
MagickNet have been contributing for years. A lot of it is either pretty
basic "every mage should have a _____ in their repertoire" type stuff or
rather oddball spells that nobody would want to buy (Control Goldfish,
Repel Bubbles, etc. the latter IIRC was developed by a Rat shaman that was
attacked and bathed by his friends once, although the guy's Smite
Cockroach (lesser) might be useful). They come in all flavors, divided
by type and tradition so there are quite a few replications, just be sure
you end up in the right sector. A word of warning though, all the
formulae are "use at your own risk" so I don't normally get my formulae
from there, or if anything I always look them over carefully for flaws or
deficiencies. A decent source of inspiration mostly.]<<<<<

Stand by, we may need to move in a hurry.

Could two of you cover the junction of Fifteenth and Hertzog from about
2330, for maybe half an hour? If we hit trouble, we'll scream and run,
and draw them over to you. Probably be all right, but we're getting
close to something, and that makes me tense.

This is what we got. We're en route to talk to Slick now.

+++++begin video
A dark alley, Lynch leading down it: almost reflexively scanning the
heaped garbage and rusting dumpsters for threats. Movement behind him,
Lilith and Quinn backing him up, as he approaches a door little
different from any other except for the spray-painted question mark.He
knocks twice, and the door swings open.

Inside is what might have been a bar until it was firebombed: now, just
a large, boarded-up room, walls blackened by soot, and very dark for the
moments before his Eye Lights kick in: he sidesteps away from the door
to avoid being silhouetted, Quinn following and Lilith bringing up the
rear.

"Glad you could make it." the Dwarf standing by the remnants of the bar
says.

"You're Jimbo, right?" Lynch asks.

"Yeah. And these three - " three Ork youths emerge from behind the bar,
facing off against the visitors - "are your qualifying exam. After
you've dealt with them, maybe we'll talk. No guns."

The Orks advance: one has a two-by-four, another a length of pipe, and
the third swings what might be motorcycle chain.

"Oh, gee, I know this game." Lilith suggests, starting to turn, and on
'game' she leaps: bringing her foot around in a flying roundhouse kick
that sends her target sprawling, dazed and coughing for breath.

"Trebtar ekil gnis?" Quinn suggest to the chain-swinging Ork, who drops
the chain and begins to slap his forehead as he tunelessly sings "Her
name <slap> was Lola <slap>, she was <slap> a showgirl
<slap>..."

The third, facing Lynch, looks nervously at one friend (groaning on the
floor clutching cracked ribs) and the other (walking in circles,
slapping his head and singing), and hefts his pipe...

"Think it over." the mercenary advises softly, and the Ork backs off.
The Dwarf applauds briefly.

"Good enough. Enzo, check Billy, and get those ribs looked at. Could you
please restore Tom to his approximation of normality?" Quinn snaps her
fingers and the singing Ork stops in mid-word, looking puzzled and
rubbing his sore head. "Thank you. Please, follow me."

"We ought to have our own trideo show." Lilith says sotto voce, as the
Dwarf walks through the charred STAFF ONLY door.

Behind the bar, there is a clean and functional office lit by hurricane
lamps: Jimbo settles into his chair, indicates for the visitors to do
the same. "I'd offer coffee, but we don't have power at the moment."

"Might I ask what the purpose of that little theatre was?" Lilith asks
languidly.

"Three. One, it reassures me you're either Feds, or good enough to beat
the information out of me anyway. Two, it lets me see how you handle a
fight: if you casually snuff a couple of my boys, you're not someone I
want to deal with. I feed you crap, spread word you're psycho and
relocate. Three, it lets me knock the overconfidence out of said boys,
when they get the drek kicked out of them by a couple of pros. Good
enough?"

"Perfectly." Lilith replies. "So, we understand you deal in
information."

"I do indeed. What do you want to know?"

"We're looking for Slick the Stick?" she suggests.

"You and most of Miami PD. What's the plan when you catch the man?"
Jimbo, seeing Lilith light a cigarette, produces a Romeo y Julieta and
clips the end. "Anyone else?" he proffers the humidor. Quinn declines,
Lynch accepts one.

"We need him to answer a few questions. He hired for a hit on us. We
want to know who hired him. We're not planning to bust him, so long as
he talks, he's a pawn." Lynch trims the cigar with a spur, accepts a
long cedar match from Jimbo. Fragrant smoke drifts.

"Okay, that makes perfect sense to me. Since you guys are transients,
I'll set up a meet for cash. Five grand, nuyen, half now half later. He
talks, he walks, I have a reputation to maintain. Deal?"

"Deal." Lynch nods. "Certified okay? And we'll pay up front. We can
trash _your_ rep if you stiff us, after all, Sharon Goodnight's a
friend."

Jimbo looks slightly surprised. "You really want the guy, don't you?"

"Yeah. Whoever hired Slick is on our shit list. Plus, you know anything
about Samhain?"

"Jesus, you guys like trouble, don't you?" The Dwarf shakes his head.
"Cops know most of what I do on that one, guy was a friend of Shaz .
That was _bad_. Offing cops is trouble round here. Offing a cop and
carving a signature into his skull... that's just rude. You talked to
Shaz, you know what I know. I get anything else, I'll pass it on. Oh,
yeah, a freebie." Jimbo puffs on the cigar. "Be careful who you announce
yourself to. There's interest in finding you and your friends. Money
involved. You're not Miami's favourite people."

"Nobody ever appreciates the good guys..." Quinn chuckles.
+++++end video

Jimbo's a useful man to know. Worth remembering him if we're ever im
Miami again.]<<<<<

MagicNet? No, my account there is probably frozen by now. Formulae, though,
we can talk about that. The unique spells I was talking about are the
following:

Shapechange II: As per the Shapechange basic formula (A.J. Meyer's work,
out of Omikami MagiLabs, I think), but this version preserves any cyberware
you may have. I use it to keep my cyber-camera and flare comp running so I
can get film while disguised as a cute little cat, but I guess turning your
sammy mates into chipped up tigers would be quite effective.

Ice Prison: Basically it's a sustained spell that wraps the target in ice
for as long as you like. Can't breathe of course, but frag 'e, they knew
the risks when they started messing with a mage, right? Kinder than the
next one, too.

Ice Bolt: Modified from the physical manipulation spell they teach to damn
near every corp wagemage, good old flamethrower. This one uses cold to get
pretty much the same effects, but instead of cauterising any wounds, it
tends to leave gaping holes in the victim.

Also, I'm not a bad enchanter, if you don't mind your foci lacking a
brandname. I have the formula for a unique new type of focus too, but I
won't talk about that to just anyone.]<<<<<
