Play it safe and build a paper trail, I say. This is how it happened.

Only way this'll ever get opened is if it goes to drek anyway...

Hart sits, hunched over a cup of coffee. Captain Moran regards her with
some compassion.

"It sucks, doesn't it?" he asks.

"It sucks, it blows, and it's fucked up all the way to Tokyo." Hart replies
vehemently.

"Look, Juli... I did what I could."

"I know you did, Pat. We were really getting somewhere, you know?
People in Tarislar were talking to cops. They wouldn't say shit to a Puyallup
uniform, but they'd open up some to a Task Force patrol. We were
getting somewhere."

"And then they yanked the plug... look, Juli, what's your plan?"

"What?" Hart looks up, startled.

"You _have_ a plan, don't you? You been working for me four years, and
you _always_ find a plan." Moran teases.

"Yeah, I do. I need office space, weapons and ammo, computer time,
budget, and damn all oversight, though." Hart sighs.

"You got it."

"Look, it's a lot to ask, in fact it's your career on the line, but it's a
_chance_ - what?"

"You got it, Juli. You're going to take Elliott and some 'runners and go
shadow against Descabiere and Malone, aren't you?" Moran asks.

"Am I that obvious?" Hart asks. It sounds like she's smiling.

"Only to your friends, Juli. Only to _good_ friends." Moran covers his eyes.
"Officially I can't help. Unofficially, what you do in your office is your
business until someone complains, and I won't hear a complaint for a
while. I got some confiscated weapons and cash that haven't been logged
yet, and the evidence locker needs better security. I'll report them missing
and scrounge some proper updates, you make good use of them. You..."
Moran pauses. "You go do what's right. There are good people in Lone
Star, Juli. You have to look hard but there are still some good cops. Don't
worry too much about legal, just do what's right and don't get caught. You
understand?"

"Yes, Pat. I understand." Hart reaches out, squeezes her Captain's hand.
"And thank you."

"No." Captain Moran pushes her hand away. "You're probably going to die,
Juli. I don't have the guts to take on Malone. I'll just turn a blind eye and
act the dumb Irish cop and curse him as a damn Taig. I'm sending you out
to die and all I can do is say I won't hinder you."

"Yeah, well, Pat? Round here that's enough to make you a hero." Hart
sighs. "I saw too much of what men like Malone did to Tarislar."

"Man of La Mancha." The Captain sighs heavily. "If not me, then who? If
not now, then when? Read it in school. Never thought I'd be Sancho
Panza."

"You could come in on this, Pat. I could use you."

The pain is clear in Moran's eyes. "Juli... I have _family_. You know what
Malone would do to them?"

"Yeah. So do this for me, Pat. Find me some people with nothing to lose."
Hart's words are harsher than her tone. "And stay alive. I'll need every
friend I can get."
+++++end video

He got emotional and tired and sad after that. I know what he means,
though. Four children and one granddaughter... he's got plenty of targets
for Malone to go for.

Whereas Andy and I... just have the two of us. Unless you count
Nicodemus and Cat, anyway. We're more expendable.

But we've got money and weapons and a secure base and a Fed "acting in
support".

And if we don't do something, who the hell will?]<<<<<
