The view is from a corner of a comfortably appointed office, whose
wooden-veneered desk is covered with protective plastic. A tall, slim
Elven girl in black motorcycle leathers is folding back the plastic
dropsheet, before dropping into the leather armchair with a comfortable
sigh. A pad of foam on the corner of the desk seems to have no function,
until she hoists her booted feet onto the wooden desk and the razor-
sharp spurs on her heels rest neatly on the foam, protecting the wooden
surface.

The door bursts open and a burly Ork walks in. "If you're not the boss,
you'd better - oh, you're the boss." He grins and lowers the shotgun.

Easy chuckles. "Heard things got lively while I was gone."

"Nothing we can't handle. Yet." As if by some unseen signal, another
staff member enters with coffee, placing it by Easys's elbow before
withdrawing.

"That may change, now I'm back. Glad you're okay, anyway." The Elf
reaches down, comes up with her CAR-15 held one-handed. Unloading and
clearing it, she methodically begins to strip and clean it. "Missed
this."

"The rifle?"

"The office. The place. You. How's business?" Easy seperates bolt and
carrier, wipes the bolt meticulously with a lint-free rag.

Vincenzo drops into the seat otherwise. "Well, let's see. We made a good
margin on the first crop, even after getting it certified safe and
shipping it uptown. Didn't get as much usable land as we wanted, but
we're okay. The mercs are virtually set up next door, airstrip and
everything. So now we get the sound of freedom every few days."

"The sound of freedom?" Easy arches an eyebrow.

"What they used to call jet noise. Just takeoffs and landings, they
don't operate round here. But they're good neighbours."

"How about the stores?"

"Losing a fortune in shoplifting and the occasional robbery attempt.
Only just breaking even. If we can get the theft losses down we'll be
okay. And it's helped that local people are getting work out of this.
Calms it some. No gang problems."

"And the social shit?"

"School's full. We're building another wing. Never knew so many people
wanted an education." Vincenzo shrugs.

"You get some schooling, you get a temporary SIN, you get a job, you get
out of this hellhole and you can get your family out with you. Big deal
to a lot of kids. Family matters around here." Easy drains her coffee,
begins carefully oiling the pieces of carbine and reassembling them.
"How's Skids?"

"Still clean. Slipped once, the school kicked his ass and he's been a
good boy since. Started eating again, started running, he's a good kid.
You'd hardly recognise him."

"Good. Any word on the three hitters?" The Elf slaps the thirty-round
magazine back into the carbine, pulls back the cocking handle and
chambers a cartridge.

"Serenity handled it. Their report should be on your system."

Easy nods calmly, checking the safety on the CAR-15. "Good. Time to
carve some payback." She rises to her feet, bends and straightens with
the Colt carbine in one hand and her katana in the other. "The bitch is
back, Vinny. Spread the word."
