A black strip of tarmac runs between brown sandy terrain.
The camera follows a large red motorbike as it roars around
a corner. On the side of the fairing in white letters
is written 'Ducati', on the back and front can be seen the
number 11. The rider is wearing black leathers with red piping
and patches larges and small advertising various products.
The paint scheme on the rider's helmet starts black on the
top fading into grey at the bottom. Just in front in a green
and white machine, number 111, with 'Honda' written in the
petrol tank. This rider has a blue and red leathers covered
in advertising patches and wears a red, white and blue striped
helmet.
"And so on the final lap of this classic World Superbike
Race, we have Joe Corser on the Honda in the lead, closely
followed by Frederic Harmes on his Ducati.
This has been a great battle race fans, throughout the 34 laps
these two have been swapping the lead regularily, for the moment
Corser has the advantage. We approach the Corkscrew for the last
time and...WHOA! Just look at that move from Harmes, late
braking and dives down the inside and first down the hill.
They round Rainey corner, Harmes has the race line, but Corser
is looking for a way past. They are on the straightway heading
for turn 10. Corser is going on the inside...OHMAGOD THEY ARE
TOUCHING! Side by side down towards turn 11, Harmes has the
line, Corser is going to have to go outside, AND HE'S OFF IN
THE DIRT, Corser tried to brake as late as possible, but just
ran out of track. Harmes is the winner, Corser has managed to
hold on for second place. Here we see the winner Frederic Harmes,
cruise around waving to the crowd, Corser comes up to him and
shakes his hand, drives away. Good win for Harmes and...CRACCK!
what was that? HARMES IS DOWN, he clutched his chest and then
went over. I see marshalls running to help him, wait I see what
look's like a pool of blood. The marshalls are calling for someone.
I see a doctor. Oh my gosh, this is terrible, what has happened?
Frederic Harmes the winner of our Classic SuperBike Race is down
on the track, we can see what looks like blood, but we have no
idea what has happened. I see a doctor has arrived and is tending
to him. Here comes the ambulance now and, what's that disturbance
over there, I see a fight and OUCH! that must have hurt, a dwarf
has emerged from the crowd and is rushing to Harmes' side. He is
being held back by a marsh...no, the marshall has just flipped over
the dwarf's shoulder. The other marshalls are stepping back. The
dwarf seems to be helping the doctor. Harmes is being lifted into
the ambulance, they are off. I hope that everything will be all
right race fans, stay turned for more information...

Harley, the Duke is fine, the only damage was to the left
fairing when Fade went down. As we speak it has been replaced and
all it needs now is repainting. As for Fade, AQ says that he had
a restless night, but is on the mend, no news about his capacities
yet.
As has been discussed in detail, it seems that the shooter was not
a professional, probably a foot soldier. Knew how to use the gun,
but fortunately for Fade was not that good a shot. Unable to draw
a bead at high speed so had to wait until it all slowed down. At
the moment I am checking over the race course, but with the police
crawling all over the place it is not easy. I am going in this
evening to try and pinpoint the place the shooter was located.

Maybe you and/or Ein_Schuss could help me with the following.
The bullet was a 7.62mm, wind velocity was virtually nil. From
the pictures any idea where the shooter might have been located?

Also, any idea on the weapon, from the information I have gleaned
so far, lightweight, able to be dis-assembled or easily concealed,
maybe even a single shot weapon, which might explain why they did
not go for the medic, or me. Some sort of sniper rifle.

Another thing Harley, keep that last thought in your mind, I might
take you up for that maintenance job.

One more thing, it cost me enough to get my personal comp modified,
so I am NOT going back to dating in your strange manner.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Glad to hear Fade's okay, dude, that man can _ride_. I'm pretty
damn good at streetfighting, but I figure he'd beat me easy on a track...

Looking at the setup, the shooter had to be in this quadrant here.

+++++include map: track & surrounds.jpg
[A 3D representation of the track and the buildings surrounding it. A
segment of the map, its point centred on the spot where Fade was shot,
is highlighted red]

You can rule out parts of that - too open, or too many people around, or
no line-of-sight.

+++++include map: track & surrounds.jpg
[The red highlight is much more fragmentary]

One option that I figure, our shooter had some kinda silencer fitted - to
cut the muzzle blast? - and was using subsonic ammo so's nobody heard
the 'CRACK' of the bullet going by.

That could be a different explanation for how long he waited... that shot
had to be at least two hundred yards, which is kinda long for a subsonic at
a moving target. Slower bullet, means you need lots more deflection, so
you want a nice stable target.

Why just the one shot? Beats me there, pal. Maybe a one-shot weapon,
maybe he got a jam, maybe he got disturbed before he could fire the
second. Most of the hitters I know who use rifles tend to go for a second
shot at least, kind of insurance?

Didn't hear nothing about a rifle being found anywhere at the track, and
I'm on fair terms with the cops right now, so looks like your guess about a
takedown weapon's maybe on target. Shooter puts it together, fires,
breaks it apart into something concealable, _di-di mau_'s outta Dodge.

'Course, maybe the reason he only got one _hit_, is that he tried a few
shots during the race and missed, and saved the last one for an easier
target at the end?

I got lotsa speculation and not many answers, but I hope it's some kinda
use. Best wishes, amigo.]<<<<<

Good win for Harmes and...CRACCK! what was that?
+++++end sound file

See, the sound of the bullet is quite distinct, but there is no other
sound, so I guess a silencer was used. As has been surmised, it all
points to a non-professional shooter, from what has been discussed
here I am glad that it was, or Fade would not be recovering.

Latest news on Fade, well Aquarium has him still heavily sedated, and
we hope to be able to move him from the hospital tomorrow. Would have
been done quicker, but I have the feeling that the authorities would
have frowned on me doing the pickup in my helicopter.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Harley, thanks for the info, I have done some checking up on
my side and have also narrowed the area down. I could not get into
the track area last night, the place was crawling with goons of
some sort. I could see Police cruisers, but there were also a couple
of GEV's there as well, no markings. I hope that they have not wiped
out too many clues.
Strangely enough though, they seemed to be having a good time, looked
to me as if they had hired out the restraurant and track facilities.
From your map, it looks as if they did not get anywhere near the
suspected areas.
By the way, the weapon was not subsonic, listen again to the commentary

+++++insert sound file comment.au
Good win for Harmes and...CRACCK! what was that?
+++++end sound file

>>>>>[I see Seamus Malone has taken a dislike to you. If you need somewhere
safe to stay, no strings attached, I can provide that for as long as you need. I
may be who I am 'family' wise, but Malone likes picking on women - and I don't
like that.

Anyway, the offer is there.]<<<<<

>>>>>{The analysis got done by some package called 'ShooterMap". It's
federal stuff, but then I'm hiding out with a Fed at the moment, so go
figure.

It's nothing fancy, though, dude, just a 3D modelling suite with a custom
user interface. I coulda done it myself in half a day with my CAE package,
this stuff just cuts it down to maybe an hour or so of punching in the data
_in_ to get the answers _out_.]<<<<<

That's a really kind offer, Dona Minnie, I'm honoured. May even need to
take you up on it.

Meantime, me and some buddies are planning to lay serious hurt on that
Malone scumbag. I screwed him over once already in Vegas, guess I kind
of got a taste for it or something.

Hey, Seamus - BOHICA!]<<<<<
