Subject: Strangeness at FRAG.

Admiral, I "obtained" some information that interests me a little
bit, and I think it might interest you as well. Frankly, I didn't buy the
helicopter crash story that was coming out of FRAG so I got ahold of some
imagery and had my people analyze it -- looks like they're having problems
at their main base, but helicopter crashes aren't it. Also, comparing the
facility that we were able to see from above with the official documents
was somewhat enlightening.

The bottom line is:

(a) Someone hit that base -- hard. The fuel dumps are smoking holes,
several choppers are wreckage on the tarmac, and the cyclohexane
levels in a number of the buildings are pretty high, suggesting
explosions.

(b) Ernang's little base is MUCH larger than what's in the official
records. He could support more than a thousand troops at the
base, though it was only funded at the company level. Something
extremely fishy is going on.

Oh, and don't let me forget (c): Lt. Colonel Jason Running Wolf Lynch.
He's been promoted and transferred to Ernang's command? I smell a
rat. Something EXTREMELY fishy is going on here -- Jason and I have
discussed these FRAG guys at some length, and I find it very unlikely
that Ernang would want to bring Jason into his unit.

So, the simple question, Admiral: What the hell is going on? ]<<<<<

Subject: Strangeness at FRAG.

Captain Turner, thank you for your report. Your diligence and... Oh,
fuck this polite milspec bulldrek.

Zach, well done. You know what you just spotted? The aftermath of the
reason I'm told some high-spec corporate sites in Seattle, in the late
'40s and early '50s, used to label their emergency equipment "For use
only in case of fire, explosion or Lynch".

Our favourite *full* colonel (as of yesterday, thanks to some heavy
political pressure, apparently Jason's now third-in-line of the FRAG's
command system - believe that and I've got some high-class condos in
Redmond to sell you) got into the FRAG base and, basically, blew the
drek out of it. They still have Lilith in custody, as far as I can tell,
which means Lynch will be *pissed*.

Why did this happen? Because Ernang's into some nasty black-magic
bulldrek. It seems he's planning to start a war with the Native American
Nations and thinks he's got some sort of magical equaliser that'll let
us win. He hasn't bothered to inform the chain of command, or troubled
with details like the fact that the *civilian* government sets policy
and we just carry it out, he's just going to make it happen.

I can't do a damn thing through channels about it. Ernang's turned a
disaster (his senior NCO, MSgt Christiansen, was one of the Farmer's
pets) and the Thunda fiascos into an advantage - his private army isn't
under any outside oversight that might "compromise its essential
operations". So he seems to be spending far more than he's authorised...
that's just because by cutting out bureaucracy he's able to be much more
efficient. Try fighting *that* argument in front of the House
Procurement Subcommittee.

If I had to give you advice, Zach, it would be to stand back, stay out
of the way, politely obfusticate if you're asked to help the FRAG, and
very discreetly put the word around that Ernang stinks like week-old
dogshit.

Why did Ernang promote Lynch? Because he knows that Jason was happy as a
respected overage 1Lt, didn't much want to be a major, and gets grumpier
the higher he's promoted. Because a lot of people will recognise a
purely-political promotion for what it is and lose respect for the
officer involved. He's found a good way to hurt Jason's credibility, and
this is all about credibility... who believes Lynch, and who believes
Ernang?

To be honest, Captain Turner, I don't know what the fuck I should do. I
know the situation sucks but I don't know how to turn it around. Any
advice, suggestions or ideas are urgently requested.

Consider *that* an order.]<<<<<

With all due respect, Admiral, standing back is hardly my style.
Especially when I have friends involved. As far politely turning
down any of Ernang's requests, frankly he's lucky that I don't
saddle my boys up and go kick the shit out of his little private
army.

My recommendation for you is to get the duly appointed civilian
government in on this -- christ, they can't be happy not to have
oversight, and if a few of the images from that base were to happen
to make it to public trideo, they'd be even more upset. All they
have to do is get an order down the chain of command to my desk, and
I'll have my team resolve the issue. I know, I know, I'm not holding
my breath, believe me.

I feel it's only fair to warn you that I'm going to offer Jason any
assistance that I can provide, personally. I will not take my team
off on an unauthorized adventure, but short of that he's got any help
I can give him. ]<<<<<

Zach, you probably realise *exactly* how good it is to get friendly mail
at a time like this.

Things suck. General Ernang seems to be gearing up for a war with the
Sioux Nation, as a prelude to restoring the "historic glory of the
United States of America". Excuse *me* if I find that prospect less than
enthralling.

He's got Lilith and I couldn't get her out.

That hurts.

I was three feet from her and if I'd just had five seconds longer I
could have got her out... but I didn't and I didn't.

At least I made a mess of the place going in and out... but that won't
hurt them enough.

Between you and I, he's cut himself a politically unassailable position.
Look how many folks are blaming the collapse of the FBI Projects on
"political interference" and "outside meddling" - he's used that to
carve himself near-immunity from the chain of command.

I doubt Ernang will touch you with a barge pole, if only because you and
I have too much combat time in common. He *knows* you wouldn't believe
I'm a 'traitor to the UCAS' without question.

That means, you're on his shitlist too. If he gives you a mission, it'll
be a suicide job.

Be careful, Zach. I don't have enough friends that I can lose one.

And what's this 'colonel' crap? I'm a UCASMC Reserve *lieutenant*
colonel reporting to Admiral Kowalski, and that over my strenuous
objections. Who the hell kicked me to full colonel and why?

I *quit* this business. We dissolved SIGA, we walked away.

This shit wasn't meant to happen any more.

I knew I could count on you, Captain <smile>

More seriously... watch yourself. Move too openly against Ernang and
you'll be shut down as a 'Sioux fifth columnist' or some such drek. By
the time you clear your name and get your manoeuvre room back, it'll all
be over one way or another.

Shutting down Ernang politically... well, I have some ideas, and I know
an old CIA hand who's helping me. We can't *stop* him but we're making
some Congresscritters less enthusiastic about backing him unreservedly.
The old battle between oversight and security is still to be resolved.

As to the military side... you render Jason all the aid you can without
getting yourself or your people killed too badly. Beyond that... it's
your Team, Captain, and your responsibility, and your people. You do
what you believe is right, and realise that you may have to answer to
harsher judges than I.

Don't ever go for flag rank, Zach. The power's an illusion, but people
still expect you to be able to just make drek happen.

I think I'm going to log you and your whole Team as being active on a
long-range reconnaisance of Mindanao. Out of reach and out of contact.
Free agents, in other words, until you get caught where you shouldn't
be.

Oh, that's right, you've been out in the field so you wouldn't have
caught it. You've been promoted to full colonel, and assigned to Ernang's
staff. You're third in command for the outfit that you're trying to bring
down. Ain't it great when life throws you a curveball?

I have to admit, Ernang thinks quick and is VERY good at the politics
angle -- hell, we knew he didn't get promoted for his military skills.

Incidentally, Jane Kowalski signed my whole team out as being on a
"long-rang reconaissance of Mindanao", so I'm unavailable for tasking
from Ernang -- hell, even if I weren't I'd doubt very much he'd send us
on a mission of any type. He may be immune to oversight, but SEAL Team
Two most certainly is not. I'd be more than happy to testify to the
oversight committee how General Ernang sent me and my boys on a suicide
mission because he was afraid we were going to interfere with his plans
for world domination.

Oh my, I just had an epiphany. Oh, this is good. This is REALLY
good. The bulk of SEAL Team Two is going to go on joint excercises with
the Wildcats just as soon as I can arrange it. I've got some friends
over there, so I bet I can turn it around in a ocuple of days. I wish I
could see the look on Ernang's face when he hears about it.

If you want some more tactical support, let me know. I trust my guys, and
they're coming along nicely. They fought Tangent's guys to a standstill
and gave a good accounting of themselves in the process. I'd be happy to
lead a platoon in and provide a nice distraction for you while you snatch
Lilith. Think about it and let me know. ]<<<<<

Well, okay, I caught up to you, but thanks to Ernang? And O6 when I
still have plenty of fieldwork to do? And nominally attached to his
unit?

This sucks. Of course it sucks. It was *meant* to suck. And it does.

Anyway. You're off to Sioux turf? For one of those joint exercises with
the Wildcats that we never officially do? If you haven't already, sure
you ask for Master Sergeant Daniel Running Wolf :) He's still a
reservist and available for recall, and he's another good conduit to get
word of what Ernang's planning out.

The bastards have moved Lilith, and I don't know where to yet, or I'd
take you up on your offer.

But we do appreciate the public service you did dear Lynch. He can now
tell the difference between a paintball and a burst. And you even did
Skull and his friends a favour: they now know which end of the gun is
intended to point at the baddies. We'll be easy on you when we catch
you.]<<<<<

Look, it's really simple. Someone caught you on camera during one of
your runs, you realised how inept you looked compared to us, and now
you're in serious denial and arguing with yourselves over whether you
were incredibly cool or totally lame. Which is which? I guess it's Jenna
- the brains of the pair - trying to back off, while Gabriel, still in
his tuna-induced haze, persists in believing his own propaganda.

If you like, I could demonstrate how ineffective a gel round can be. Put
eighteen grams of Pyrodex behind a 10mm Formula Three, and in the hands
of a couple of barely-competent bozos it's not much more than a toy. In
the hands of someone who actually learned to shoot, it can take down
anyone you're likely to meet in the street. Often, it's the best tool
for the job, especially since it doesn't pile up corpses all over the
place. Oh, the point of a professional is that you don't kill
unnecessarily.

And for a pair of alleged megadeckers, it's kind of funny that someone
seems to be able to so easily fake mail from your account.]<<<<<

Can you please not say "easily"? The headache is only just fading. They
might be dumb, but their system admins aren't.]<<<<<
