KIRSTIN: "This is Kirstin McClellan, reporting for National Network at the
United Nations building. Today has been witness to a heated exchange between
representative of the German Imperial government and the newly-formed Omega
Island. The Omega Island representative, Ambassador Torrence Hastings, was at
the podium responding to the allegations made by the leader of the resistance
in his nation, Jacob Marcus. The exchange was started by the demand of a
German delegate demanding explanation of the sinking of one of its freighters
in the Atlantic yesterday:

HASTINGS: ...and we encourage our fellow members of this great body to
ignore the feeble accusations of the rebels. Our government is
not bound by corporate interests. These rebels merely seek to
legitimize their criminality. Further--

GERMANY: You accuse others of criminality?!? Perhaps you would care to
explain your actions of yesterday in the Atlantic.
HASTINGS: We searched a ship, the _Hamburg_, I believe, under our
Secretary of Defense suspicion that a enemy of our state was
aboard.

GERMANY: I see...and then you saw fit to destroy that freighter.

HASTINGS: I hardly think this is the time to discuss--

GERMANY: Nein! Antwort die Frage! You destroyed the _Hamburg_, a
non-combative ship in international waters!!!

HASTINGS: An enemy of our state was aboard!

GERMANY: Was he discovered to be on board?

HASTINGS: Well, no--

GERMANY: And what of your evidence of this supposed enemy's guilt?
What did he do?

HASTINGS: Well, we have not yet ascertained exactly what he did, but--

GERMANY: So, you destroyed a ship without provocation, merely on your
SUSPICIONS? Is that right, mein Herr? More than 100 men lost
their lives on that boat! Men with families!

HASTINGS: Well, certainly, we extend our deepest regrets to the families
of--

GERMANY: SPARE me your empty platitudes! You have acted in violation
of International Law, and have challenged the Honor of my
nation!

At that point, the representative of the German delegation stormed out of the
room. At the end of the exchange, Ambassador Hastings looked positively white,
possibly because he was aware of what today's events might mean. However,
neither he nor anyone else from the Omega Island Embassy could be reached for
comment on Germany's heated accusations.

As to who the German delegate was, that has proved a bit of a mystery. Unlike
his associated delegates, he was in a German Army uniform, which made him look
somewhat out of place. Despite this, we have not been able to discover his
identity.

Although no member of the German Consulate here in New York has cared to
comment on the incident, it is a well known fact that Germany has been the most
outspoken critic of Omega Island's entry into the United Nations. In fact, the
speech made today in response to the leader of the resistance was an attempt to
head off any further deterioration of the tiny nation's international support.
Unfortunately for them, it backfired. And the cost of their mistake may very
well mean war.
