"Good afternoon, Ma'am. How are you today?"

Well, John. How goes the missile test in Nevada?

"I've just recieved word that the the Flying Fox performed well within
tolerances. We tested both weapons and they both performed perfectly."

I'm glad to hear that. Question: We sent four prototypes into Ute to
test....

"I'm sorry. All four were used. The two concrete filled missiles hit
within 2 meters of thier targets. It appears that the signature/
sillouette recognition system on the missiles work very well. The two
active weapons totally destroyed thier targets."

And were the Ute reps impressed?

"They're still not sure that they need cruise missiles for their
defense. However, our experts demonstrated thier unique capabilities
with the 4 missiles we had, and they're convinced for the time being."

And the special missile?

"We recieved permission to fire it two hours ago, and will do so in 38
minutes when most of the sattelites are out of the sky. It's CRDD
profile is too distinctive. But as it's meerly a difference in
controlling software, I'm convinced it will work as well as the others
today did."

Excellent. I've recieved word from AM that the first weapon's material
was shipped to Peregrine 4 hours ago, and Peregrine has told me that they
had begun fabrication.

"'Let the games begin...'"

They began a while ago, John.

"Yes Ma'am."

What about Sheppard-Intrepid? I've not heard much about thier operations
in the news recently.

"I ordered the attempts to manufacture malfunctions ceased for the time
being. They'd suffered about as much as could be expected from that
particular product line. I've authorized a few nuisance runs personally,
and we're searching to see if they could provide us with some
enhancements in our own product line. We've had a little success, but if
we bother them too much, we could attract attention ourselves."

Speaking of which, what is happening with the Wraith?

"We recovered the flight recorder and we have ruled out pilot error. In
fact, it appears that several components failed. The engineers are
looking over the other Wraiths we have around to be sure that they are
malfunciton free. They've duplicated the situations that the recorder
recorded, and so far no failures on the parts that appear to have failed
have occured. It appears, to preliminary evidence, that the Wraith was
sabotaged. More evidence will be forthcoming, I'm certain."

And what about this other security corp, Vathor?

"Intelligence shows them to be up and coming, but also a minimal threat
to our current market sector. Yes, they can take minor contracts from
MSI, but none of the larger contracts are in areas that they can compete
in. Vathor would have to open entire branches and move thousands of
security guards to take those from us. They are a minor inconvenience."

The time to stop minor inconveniences is when they are still minor. If
Ares or the others had stopped Maxim when they should have, we would not
be talking now.

"Very true. However, they appear to be in the market with Sheppard-
Intrepid, and those two corps appear to be far more inherently
competitive than Maxim and S-I. Leaving Vathor alone for the time being
might be the best thing we could do against S-I at this point. Far
better, even, than further product failures or similar difficulties."

Let me think on that. For now, what you say has merit. If they destroy
each other, then we could possibly step in and buy up the peices. Now,
what about this Pulp Fiction. Any leads?

"A few. It is possible that the leader is a woman who had a relationship
with your ex-comrade, Caine."

That's a name I do not care to hear, John...

"I know, Ma'am, but this time you must hear it. If so, then nothing we
can do will stop her. I don't know for sure if it is her, but
indications seem to point that way. She used to be a decker, and perhaps
still is. But if it is her, we have a potential major problem. She
wouldn't let herself be placated. And we could have a possible martyr if
those she works with are as fanatic as she could be. That would
necessitate far more expensive security arrangements for our less
important facilities than we currently have in place."

Drek. You were right, I did need to hear Caine's name. Keep me
informed.

"Are there other aspects of your history you care to share with me, ma'am?"

What, you're vaunted intelligence can't answer your questions? I'm
surprised.

"I'm sure it could if I had asked it to. But I've not."

I've torqued off a lot of people in my years, John, and will continue to
do so for a good many more years. Which reminds me, John. I've hired my
own guards. I don't appreciate having them report to you before they do
to me.

"I have a problem with that, Ma'am. I cannot adequetly protect your life
without men and women guarding you that I know and trust explicitly."

Too bad. Deal with it, John.]<<<<<
