Sorry about the last transmission, fluctuations in the weather down here
caused the satlink to break up, we don't have the power in a mobile unit
to break through.

Our schedule is somewhat behind our original projection, we met with a
couple of problems at Palenque. I expected to be able to decipher the
writings fairly quickly with the knowsofts Dewy provided, but it turned
into a harder job than we at first expected. With the removal of the
rebel threat, we had the archaeologist teams return within three days,
so we've had to run interference for them, while they set up permanent
guards and security measures. The strangest part of this whole thing
was liaising with Aztlan authorities, never thought I'd ever get the
opportunity. The Archaeologists set up a temporary cover for us, which
went down a treat.

That's what we've found out about Twilight's soul from the inscriptions
in the temple and information from the library. There's about 50 years
worth of research down here, so we've probably missed some of the data,
but time is limited, the weather is starting to degrade down here,
preliminary forecasts say there's one hell of a storm coming in.
Initial research indicates that this area, Palenque was a centre of
power for the Mayan civilisation, according to one of the eggheads here
it was built as a portal to the underworld, where the Mayan kings might
defeat the Lord of Death and return in dreams and visions, it is a place
of prophecy and visions. There's an observatory at the centre of the
place, where Dewy has been having great fun. From what we can gather at
the moment, the item we are searching for, has power on two occassions
during the year, both are equinoxes, though we've still yet to ascertain
exactly what that means.

The airfield near the site has been cleared of debris, and the rebel
camp, is now being used to hold the security teams covering the area.
The scientists down here are _very_ interested in liasing with you
regarding extracting some of the stuff that's down here. It appears
that the Aztlan government wants everything they dig up, the scientists
don't agree with this, they've found indications that the Mayan
civilisation is linked to five other civilisations in history, and may
date back further than previously thought. Records at this time show
them to have existed as an organised group about 5,000 years BC, And
some stuff they've uncovered hints that their knowledge and architecture
may have been inherited from a seafaring race that settled here. This
is all creating a huge stir amongst the eggheads. They have found a
huge stockpile of gold, jade, onyx and other ornaments here which they
want removed, as far as I am aware, there are three such finds in the
area, they'd like it all shifted back to the UCAS for carbon dating and
research, they think it's older than preliminary tests here reveal.
There are also a number of other articles that they want moved out.
There's a considerable dollar value attached to this stuff, and they are
more than willing to pay generously to extract the relics. Maybe you
can negotiate something with them. If you can get a small transport in
here it would be extremely helpful to these people. Two of them have
some influence with the local militia, so your plane can come in on the
pretext of delivering heavy equipment and other essentials, they'll make
the transportation arrangements, and load the stuff onto the plane for
extraction. I'm told that they can clear at least two months of almost
continual flights for this purpose. Seems the Azzies want these
excavations carried out at all possible speed. They also want something
from these places, though what that is, I don't know, but the techies
down here are unwilling to let the Azzies take everything away from
them.

We're presently on route to Bonampak, We've received information
indicating that a couple of answers to our quest may lie in this
location, It lies on the edge of the Lacandon jungle, and there is a
possibility we may find an answer to one of our problems here. That
problem is the construction of this damned object we're collecting.
We've had a look at the piece we've got, and quite frankly, I don't see
how it can be assembled into one item. Dewy and the scientists figure
there are twelve pieces forming a circular unit, with a central item as
the focus, but there are no clips, ridges or other locking points. I'm
told thirteen was a significant number for this culture, but not why. I
don't know what we'll find at Bonampak, but I'll keep you informed.
Two of the translators working at Palenque are going to go through the
data they've got, and see what they can find out for us, so that should
save us a little time.
