Matt, sorry for the formality in the header, but this is semi-official.
Chris, I'm sure you remember Matt, he's a good guy and very handy to
have backing us up in this kind of work.
We found the van: confirmed ID from the plates and the .357 bullet
holes. Four hits from six shots with a pistol at 170 yards, not bad
marksmanship if I say so myself. I even hit one of the occupants. Damn,
I'm good... if I'd been better maybe Bass might still be alive.
They took it to a lockup garage to switch, it seems: they got in their
replacement, a Fiat Eurovan, and blam, a fuel-air explosive under the
back seat killed them all. Confirmed one of my handloads in one of them,
and the rifle's ballistics and the loads matched the bullet that killed
Bass.
Competent but unexceptional muscle from out of town: three guys, so I'd
guess a driver, a spotter and a shooter. One of them had prints that
matched a record in New York, we're checking the other two out there:
I'd guess this was out-of-town talent. Rifle was a Remington 950, nice
and anonymous, buy the damn thing at any Weapons World in town. The ID
that bought it already screams "Jane Doe".
Puzzling why they didn't go for me rather than Bass, but then I didn't
really give them time after the first shot. Maybe the job was kill the
Admiral, then anyone with him, and they decided to run rather than shoot
it out with me.
Someone didn't want to pay these guys, and killed them. A definite
Farmer pattern. Speaking of which, that gives me a lead I want to check
out, probably nothing but worth a try in case it's paydirt.
