Part of me wants to say "Damn!". Mostly I could care less, he's dead and
that's what really matters.

Roger your plan for action: and also your concerns about our lack of
anywhere to go.

We're dealing with the varsity here. Someone knows the way that spooks -
Bureau, Agency, doesn't seem to matter - think and is keeping those
little leads that break cases well away from us. The one reassuring
thing about that, is that maybe nuking Everett is a distraction plan:
someone smart enough to mislead us this much is not going to want the
sort of heatwave that would come down on them after they actually pulled
a stunt like that.

I mean, we are talking total freedom of manoevre for us, plus half-a-
dozen of the dirty squads come into the open wringing their hands and
saying "if we were only allowed to arrest on whim, mindprobe without
warrant and basically do what we wanted this could have been prevented".

Not my idea of a good thing. The Agency was the product of that sort of
thinking, before it was cleaned out and Coppinger took charge: it wasn't
one of the finer periods in the history of UCAS intelligence.

Unless this is an inside job, so to speak, and someone wants their own
version of the Reichstag fire or the Kirov assassination?

As for Maxim... well, being a target is sometimes useful. If they talk,
they're clean or at least care enough to pretend. If they kill me...
then you can draw your own conclusions. Sure, if they want to they
could, I know the guy who _created_ the Org and the Quads, but it
wouldn't be easy for them to hide their involvement.

Hell with it, might as well do it. Recon by fire, so to speak.

If you'll excuse me for a few hours, I'm going to get embarrasingly
drunk on the plane back to Seattle, then sleep it off: in fact I've made
a good start on that. That sometimes shakes loose a few ideas. Besides,
it's not exactly nice to have just killed two sixtysomething pensioners,
self-defence or not: hardly what you'd call a fair fight. Lee in
particular I should have taken alive, but once weapons are out they
don't like being put away unblooded. One of my weak areas.

Damn.
