Humanis are a great excuse. A broad church, widely disliked, containing
anything from committed pacifists hoping to aid all (meta)humanity by
seperating the races, to the extreme fringe who won't rest until the
last Ork, Troll, Dwarf, Elf, shapeshifter et cetera is dead. You can
pass off almost anything and blame it on Humanis with the right support.

Trust me, I know.

Abraham... right now I could care less about publicity, but you have
more to worry about there than we do. We tried, he didn't want our help,
he took his chances on the streets. Amazing how he's happy to hide
behind a Troll when it suits him, shouldn't he have only a Human
bodyguard?

As for Maxim... I just don't buy it being them. We know they're trying
to make nukes from scratch again, this time reprocessing yellowcake
through a calutron plant. Why - after all the trouble we had last time,
after a very strongly worded diplomatic note that gave us clearance to
kick the shit out of any suspected Maxim facilities within the UCAS -
would they do something so blatantly provocative?

Okay, you can say "it's so crazy it must be a double bluff", but the one
thing neither Velli nor Skulkin is, is crazy, and this sort of
brinkmanship is too dangerous for too little gain. The machine tools
were Maxim's own, why set them up in the UCAS?. People, you can send to
any corner of the world for two thousand nuyen each.

I just don't see any reason for Maxim to do this when they could just
run the whole program inside the fence at Phnom Penh - or in the rebuilt
facilities in Warsaw, does anyone _really_ know what's inside the wire
there? We sure as hell don't - and never risk a damn thing, just quietly
build up a stock of warheads. Lots of risk, no gain.

Why? To antagonise us? What does that get them? Okay, both Skulkin and I
postured, but he knows we could badly, _badly_ hurt Maxim, and it would
take Corporate Court intervention to stop us... a whole new can of worms
for Velli. I'm not ruling her out, but until Maxim seem to have
something to gain from all this I'll leave them on hold.

Someone's playing head games with us. Someone who knows our style, knows
our mindset, probably who knows what we can get hold of and verify and
check. Someone on the inside.

As for the site... you missed a third alternative. "Chase me, chase me".

I'd chase up Serenity but they've got problems of their own: _real_ and
long-standing problems, a lot of their people tied up out of town,
including a couple of good friends. Nobody's coming forward to replace
their expertise, either.

You're off base with the bioweapons, though, Chris. No reason to have
plutonium-239 and tritum present for a bioweapon. If they were using
radiation to sterilise bioweapons, that house would have been a
_beacon_. It takes about five thousand rems to kill a man within
minutes: it takes over five _million_ rems to kill bacteria or viruses
in the same time. That sort of radioactivity, in an unshielded
environment like that house, would be setting off bells citywide and
probably globally: the ionisation alone would be sufficient to screw
with trideo reception.

We're either dealing with nukes, or a disinformation bid centered around
nukes. I'm shading towards the latter, which makes me edgy: what are we
being distracted from?

Murphy #44, "The enemy's distraction you chose to ignore is the main
axis of his attack."

You don't need a drink, you need some sleep. And so do I, pemoline
patches only go so far and you still have to make up the sleep: forty
hours airborne with never more than two hours landed, really takes its
toll. Might manage a few drinks and some action at Penumbra, but don't
expect me to be too coherent.

Oh, and I added a Matrix wildcard for cover: a Serenity decker, "Neuron
Basher", real name Donaldson if memory serves. He's a good guy, owes me
a minor favour and he's a family man with ties. I didn't cut him in
anywhere near as deep as Scourge, for "reasons of national security" (a
phrase I hate but it's sometimes true) but he's very, very sharp and
should help.

I get a rumour that British Intelligence are interested in this affair
too, but I don't have the contacts there. Quinn does, and she's tied up
on some weird chase in Denver. They apparently contacted the head of
Serenity, who is also out of town as far as can be determined. All I got
is two names, from MI5: Pendleton and Harcourt.

I'm crashing. See you at Penumbra, but don't try talking shop, my
brain's turning to Jell-O. It wants good loud music and decent beer,
then another eight hours or so of sleep. I tried prosecuting it for
treason but the case was dismissed <g>

Talk to Lilith if you need anything work-related in a hurry, a lot of
the above is her ideas anyway. Leopards see the world with a clarity
humans do well to emulate, I've learned a lot from her.]<<<<<
