Two men sit on a bench in the park: the view is from behind, from a
small camera with a directional mike. One wears civilian clothes, the
other a hooded cloak: the park is empty in the November drizzle, only
the occasional determined jogger running past.

"You have contracted for the final phase?" the robed man asks in an
electronic voice.

"Soon. I'm concerned as to how to handle it: Shadowland is becoming
unresponsive." the other replies.

"Combine can create a shell ID. Use that." the hooded man says shortly.
"That bank _must_ be destroyed."

The civilian shrugs. "It will be. I thought, perhaps, Harrow should
accompany the mission?"

"No. Our personnel must do nothing out of the ordinary for now. You are
being watched too closely. Wait, and resume normal practices when the
surveillance is elsewhere. I have almost completed my new home: it is
both a superb place of research, and an all but impenetrable stronghold.
"

"Very well. But when the next operation is complete, win or lose, I'll
be without help. Who do we have to replace them?"

"I have it in hand. You will have five or six agents by the middle of
next year. Until then I suggest you remain covert. You will have little
need of money, the loans will be dead. I will ensure your lifestyle is
adequate. Perhaps I will provide a companion tailored to your... tastes.
Almost a vacation, in fact, with only your official duties to perform."
The robed man's voice drips honey. "We have laid the foundations. Our
next mission will add to our wealth, weaken the UCAS, and strengthen our
allies. There will be blood on the carpets of the Pentagon in its
aftermath, and you will be ideally placed to exploit the chaos. In its
aftermath you will sit higher than ever before, closer to your prize.
But we must not sacrifice success for speed."

" We must not sacrifice success for speed." repeats the civilian.

"We must be patient and careful."

"We must be patient and careful." nods the civilian.

"You trust my judgement and will follow my advice." Still the wheedling,
cajoling tone from the robed man, despite the electronic note to his
synthetic voice.

The civilian nods again. "I trust your judgement and will follow your
advice."

The hooded man rises and leaves: the civilian waits a few moments, then
walks behind the bench and reaches for the camera.

Thought I'd fall for your mind control, did you? Forgot I knew about it,
made sure I could ride it out? Bet this is what you tried to do to Emma.

Well, I'm gonna stay with the program. And I'll play my part. But when
we've unified the continent, _I_ will rule my province, and _you_ will
die.

How? Because I'll make sure your bosses know, the ones who think you're
working for them, the ones who don't know about your weird experiments
and your island fortress and your diverting funds.

All this shit with Akbar to raise some cash for your pet projects, I
_know_ you didn't clear it through them, they don't know anything: but I
and my staff were running our butts off trying to cover for your raghead
army.

I could have given you Lynch and Lilith on a plate, motherfucker, if you
hadn't decided to mess with my head. This time, I'm not going to. Might
even help them out. I know how I could. Good move for me, too. Keep them
off my back, point them at you. You're not indispensible, and you're not
the only brain in this outfit, Dr Death, I can think for myself
too.]<<<<<
